Episode 38: Roger Ebert Speaks for the First Time

This Sunday night is Hollywood’s main event, the 82nd Academy Awards, and on Monday they’ll have the after party event. When it comes to movies, one name stands out as a critic, Roger Ebert. He has given the thumbs up or down to over 10,000 movies. As you may have heard, Roger has been battling cancer for the last 8 years and he is here today with some big news.

He is TV’s most famous film critic, for over 40 years people have checked out his opinion before going to the movies. He started out with the Chicago Sun-Times in 1966, and one year later he was their film critic.. In 1975 he received a Pulitzer Prize for his work and debuted his TV show with Jean Siskel. Their signature move was such a hit they even trademarked their catchphrase, two thumbs up. For the next 24 years, they became household names, on top of the film world. But in 1998, Siskel was diagnosed with a brain tumor and died less than a year later. Ebert was devastated, but the show went on because that is what Siskel would have wanted. Another blow came in 2002 when Roger was diagnosed with thyroid cancer which spread to his salivary glands and jaw. He endured surgery after surgery. In 2006 the cancer had taken his voice, forcing Roger to leave his show after 30 years.

Even though cancer has changed the face that we know and love, and taken his voice says Oprah, Roger has not slowed down one bit. His reviews are still read worldwide. Earlier this week, Roger and his wife Chaz, invited the show into their home. They go see a movie in the morning, which is their usual routine. They see 2-4 movies a day. She needs to be nearby in case Roger needs anything. They have a variety of signals meaning I love you, tell them what you know or read the note, he needs the mens room. They watch the new Polanski movie, Ghost Writer. He then meets with TV execs to discuss the possibility of a new show. They head home. They eat lunch in separate rooms- his wife feels it is unfair for her to eat in front of him when he can no longer eat what he wishes. SInce he lost his jaw he lost the lower floor of his mouth, so if he ate there’s nothing to support it. He has his lunch private, it is in a gravity drip bag, suspended from a pole which goes into a port in his stomach. After the lunch they watch Alice in Wonderland in 3D. Then it’s home for dinner, writing and a little exercise. Then it’s back out for film number 3.

Oprah welcomes Roger to the studio. They hold hands, he does the sign for I love you. Roger is able to communicate by typing his words into a computer. He is feeling terrific. They have loaded in some answers. He doesn’t remember the last the words that he spoke aloud as he didn’t know they’d be his last words. They were probably to Chas as they wheeled him in and he hopes that they were I love you. On the other hand they may have been Good morning Doctor. Oprah says that the amazing article in Esquire Magazine said that he can talk in his dreams- yes he talks in them all the time, just like he did in real life. He remembers childhood memories, in his mind he would taste the root beer he had with his father. After he lost his sense of taste, he replays the taste of that root beer over and over. Oprah says wow, that’s beautiful. Oprah asks him to tell us what her brother in law says about this- he sais that he told his brother-in-law the story and that he was fixated on root beer. Johnny asked if he had thought of that memory in 60 years, and Roger hadn’t. Johnny said that it might be that when the Lord took away Roger’s drinking, he gave him back that memory. Oprah loves that story, the audience applaud.

In a new Oscar poll from Yahoo, 36% pick Jeff Bridges for best actor, 74% say Sandra Bullock will take home gold and 41% say the winner will be Avatar. Robert’s wife of 18 years Chaz is in the studio. 4 years ago he lost his voice and the ability to eat or drink due to complications from thyroid cancer. But today he is cancer free, the crowd applaud. Roger is using computer technology to speak to us with a generic voice, but a company in Scotland is using cutting-edge technology to use his actual voice. They take hours of Roger’s past movie commentaries and create a new, computerized voice from those clips. Chaz hasnt heard Roger’s real voice since July 2006. Chaz is excited to hear it. Though it won’t be perfect, Roger says he’s looking forward to sounding like his old self again. The voice says “It’s what they call a beta. It still needs improvement, but at least it sounds like me,” he says. “When I type anything, this voice will speak whatever I type. When I read something, it will read in my voice. I have got to say, in first grade they said I talked too much. And now I still can.”

Chaz is moved to tears. She thinks that it’s incredible that that’s his voice. She asks him what does he think? “Uncanny,” his voice answers. “A good feeling.”  Oprah says to Chaz as one woman to another, Chaz is incredible and makes her proud to spell her name Woman. She refused to let Roger die. Chaz called Oprah and said she refused to let him die, and she stood by him and has been with him and taken care of him and shown what true love is. Chaz says that it  has been intense. When she married Roger, she knew what an amazing man he was. He is smart. He’s funny. He’s very respectful of women. “He’s appreciative of other cultures,” she says. “It’s hard to find someone like him. And I didn’t want to lose him. I just refused to give up on him. If there was anything in my power to help him live, that’s what I was going to do.”

Chaz reads an extract from Roger’s journal; “I believe that if, at the end of it all, according to our abilities, we have done something to make others a little happier, and something to make ourselves a little happier, that is about the best we can do. To make others less happy is a crime. To make ourselves unhappy is where all crime starts. We must try to contribute joy to the world. That is true no matter what our problems, our health, our circumstances. We must try. I didn’t always know this, and I am happy that I lived long enough to find it out.” Oprah says that’s beautiful and the crowd applaud.

Roger says that he is done with surgery, he is never going to eat or drink or talk again. Surgery would be just to patch his face back together, and he will not go through with that. This is the way he looks and his life is happy and productive, so why have more surgery? People ask if he minds that Esquire Magazine ran the photograph. He doesn’t mind at all, no one looks perfect, we have to make peace with the way we look and get on with life.

Oprah loves that, thank you. The crowd applaud. Oprah wants to ask this, does Roger  miss food? Roger nods and gesticulates. Oprah says that she read that in Esquire that he misses the socialising around food. Chaz says that he misses the camaraderie. Every now and then he’ll ask her to eat something that he used to enjoy and he’ll try and enjoy it vicariously. This Sunday is Oscar night, here is what we haven’t heard for years, Roger’s predictions in his voice.

“I can’t remember a year when it seemed easier to predict the Oscars,” he says. “Of course, those may be famous last words.”

Best Supporting Actress: “Mo’Nique will win for her powerful performance as the cruel and damaged mother in Precious.

Best Supporting Actor: “Relative unknown Christoph Waltz won the Best Actor award at Cannes for Inglourious Basterds and has never looked back.”

Best Actress: “Few people saw this one coming, but Sandra Bullock made a dazzling comeback in the Blind Side. I think she’ll win.”

Best Actor: “I pick Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart. His great performance swept the Critics’ Awards, and I think he has the momentum.”

Best Movie: “The only dicey category is Best Picture. Up in The Air was the early front-runner, and Avatar could win after its record-breaking profits. But I think it’s a win for Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker.”

Best Director: “I also pick Kathryn Bigelow for best director. If you vote against her, you’ll be going against years of precedent that say the winner of the Directors Guild Award will win the Oscar. ”

Oprah says that she really wants to meet Kathryn Bigelow. Both Cbaz and Roger will be at the Academy Awards, Oprah says that they will see them there. She thanks them.

They show a clip of Morgan Freeman in Invictus. Oprah says wow, that was the best actor nominee, Morgan Freeman. This is Morgan’s fifth Oscar nomination. He received his first Oscar statuette in 2005 for his supporting role in Million Dollar Baby, as you may recall. He joins us by satellite from Malibu, California. They say hi. She asks what it means to be asked to play the great Nelson Mandela. ”I was anointed by him, so to speak, back in the mid-90s when he was asked, ‘If his book became a movie, who would he want to play him?’” Morgan says. “He said me. So I knew somewhere down the line that I would be playing Nelson Mandela, in something”. Morgan told him long ago that if he was going to play Nelson Mandela, then he would have to have access to him. Morgan said ‘Listen, if I’m going to play you, I need to have access to you,” he says. “So over the years, we became friends, and I watched him very carefully and learned how to be him a little bit.” They show a photo of the two of them together, Oprah says she loves that shot. Oprah remembers the first time she went to Nelson’s house; she was a nervous wreck. She asks if even he, the great Morgan Freeman was a little intimidated?  What do you say when you meet somebody like that, someone that great, someone world renowned and so high in your estimation of human beings? He says, all you can think of to say is, ‘I’m honored to meet you, sir.’ And then shut up. Oprah says that she learned that too, it’s better to sit and listen when you meet him.
Morgan has been nominated for five Oscars, 1987  Street Smart, 1989 Driving Miss Daisy, 1994 one of Oprah’s favorite movies of all time, Shawshank Redemption (the crowd cheer), 2004 Million Dollar Baby, which he won, and now Invictus.  Oprah hears that Morgan sat with Nelson while he watched the movie- was he scared? No, says Morgan, he was concerned. “If he didn’t like it, I didn’t think he would say anything, but if he did like it, he wouldn’t be able to hide it,” Morgan says. “And he wasn’t able to hide it.” Mandela didn’t say anything to Morgan at all about the film. Wow, says Oprah. There’s that sphinx thing about him, says Morgan. “But when I came onscreen, he leaned over and said, ‘I know that fellow.’ So I took that to mean he recognized himself in me, and that was a big plus.” Oprah asks if he got a hug or a well-done? Nothing, says Morgan. Morgan has the pledge with him, he will not text while driving and will use a handfree  headset if necessary. Oprah asks him to repeat the pledge after her in his Morgan Freeman voice. They thank each other.

We’re getting in the mood for the Oscars on Sunday night. Critics are calling Colin Firth’s performance in A Single Man a career-defining performance. Firth plays a gay college professor grieving the sudden death of his partner . Directed by fashion designer Tom Ford, A Single Man is a work of art. The film is set over the course of a single day in 1962 Los Angeles—the day Colin’s character, George, decides to kill himself. Facing his own suicide, George sees the world in a more wondrous light. Colin Firth’s performance is captivating and earned him his first Oscar nomination.

Welcome Colin Firth. The crowd go wild, he and Oprah hug. Oprah says that he should be so proud of himself, Yes says Colin, he’s proud of Tom. This was a lonely experience for an actor in a way, especially in Colin’s department because a lot of the film was spent alone. The days he had the help of the other actors were a wonderful ride. But of course then you become very intimate with your director because this is a very, very personal story. It’s very personal to Tom. Oprah says that the scene where he gets the phone call is brilliant, is what acting is all about. She doesn’t know where he went but she could watch it over and over and cry. The crowd applaud. Colin says that the movie was shot in just 21 days. Tom set up the shot and then got out the room. The cameras rolled and there was no editorializing, no words on a page, no shouting cut. He put the phone down and the cameras rolled over 11 minutes. Tom preferred letting Colin’s imagination take over, although Tom sculpted the scene in the cutting room.

Oprah say that she heard he was going to send an email. Yes says Colin, and then the fridge guy came. He wrote the email, he still has it in his outbox, he’ll show it to Tom one day. He says that he was fascinated by Tom. This is not a man you easily bet against. Everything he’s touched has turned to gold, really. And he just thought he didn’t want to disappoint Tom. This was clearly a very personal project put squarely on Colin’s shoulders. “There was all sorts of reasons in my life when I thought—you know, I was fatigued, I’d been working a lot—I wouldn’t go there. Then I suddenly thought: ‘What an incredible leap into the unknown this will be. There’s so many improbable things here. It’s not a conventional story.” The film deals with so many human issues. Oprah clarifies that this was just the script without the deliciousness. Colin says he was ready to send the email stepping down from the project when a repairman rang his doorbell to fix his refrigerator. “That was enough time for me to reconsider,” he says. “It was just that pause before pressing send which can prove critical.” Though A Single Man is a film about grieving, Colin says it is also about falling in love with life again. “It sounds like an almost absurd comparison, but one of the films it most makes me think of in terms of its subject matter is It’s a Wonderful Life,” he says. Yes, me too says Oprah. It couldn’t be more different, all the people were angels. Playing George given Colin a real sense of what he has to be grateful for in his own life. The present moment, for a start, which is really all we have, is something to be absolutely cherished. Even though George is so sad, the world he is presented with is so incredibly beautiful. It remains for Colin like a fragrance. A Tom Ford fragrance says Oprah.

Oprah says that the film is a sensual delicious delight that you want to spoon. It was directed, produced and paid  for by Tom Ford. He’s credited with reinventing Gucci during his 10-year reign as creative director with provocative collections and ad campaigns. Five years ago, he launched his own label, and today there are 21 Tom Ford stores around the globe, making him fashion’s billion-dollar man. Last year he made the leap from fashion to film and it is no surprise that critics say that there is no more visually arresting film to see this year. Come on out Tom Ford. The crowd applaud. He and Oprah hug, he shakes hands with Colin Firth. Oprah says that the film is delicious and yummy Tom says thank you. “Fashion is a reflection of where we are in contemporary culture, but it moves, moves, moves. It doesn’t last,” he says. “In film, you create a world that’s forever sealed. It lasts forever. You can put in an old movie from the ’30s and you’re emoting and living and breathing with these people. And if you’re someone who likes to design things, build things, create things, that’s as close as you get to, you know, being God in our world, and it’s permanent”. Oprah asks him how he knew he could do it? He says that if you want to do it, do it. Of course he was afraid of a lot of things but he never let that stop him. He had a vision. “I think that’s the most important thing is that you have to have something to say,” he says. “You have to feel that you have something you want to communicate, and then in both fashion and film you have to work with a team of people to help you do that.” He wrote the script and ended up with a role that was very hard to cast. Oprah says that she’d heard the film was autobiographical, but that Tom is here and is not depressed. “This was my midlife crisis on screen; I put it on the screen and was done with it” he says. “When I first read the book, I was 20 years old and I didn’t quite get the sort of—well, Christopher Isherwood who wrote the book was a student of Vedanta. He spent an enormous amount of time learning to be present, and I didn’t pick up on that at all, and I’d come to a point in my life where I left Gucci where maybe I had let the material side of the world pull me a bit away from my spiritual side, which has always been there. And this book is about living in the moment. It’s about appreciating the connections we have with other people and reminding ourselves that that’s what’s important in life. I needed to be reminded of that at this moment.”

Oprah says that watching the movie she was reminded of her friend who wrote The Power of Now; this is a wonderful way of teaching people. Tom says that he gave everyone on the set a copy of the book as it was so important to the film. Christopher Isherwood’s first line in the book, and in the film, is waking up begins with saying am and now. That was what the book was about in 1964.

Oprah has read that Tom’s a perfectionist and that he looks at people- she says that she really needs her eyebrows done. Tom says she’s fine. Colin says that happens whenever Tom walks into a room, people feel that they need to fix something about themselves.Oprah heard that Tom cut Colin’s hair because the stylist said that Colin didn’t want his hair cut so could Tom do it. Oprah asks what Tom looks like when he’s slumming it. Colin points at Tom in his immaculate suit. Tom says kind of the same but in a dirty t-shirt and jeans. Colin says that directors on a film set are almost morally obliged to fall apart. They are in their interior worlds, doing night shifts, getting up at 5am and getting grubby. They should be letting their beards grow out. Colin says that he was falling apart in front of the camera and Tom was behind the camera pristine. Oprah asks if fashion feels aah, now, Tom says that he loves both of them and hopes he’ll have a parallel career. “I’m working on my next film project, and I’m also about to start possibly designing women’s clothes and come back to that, and it’s wonderful to be able to bounce back and forth,” he says. Oprah asks how it feels now that the film is done.  ”I am the most proud of this of anything I’ve ever created in my life,” Tom says. “Other than personal relationships with people. That’s what I’m the most proud of.” Oprah  says that the movie will last forever and she wants to see it again and again. Thanks to Colin and Tom.

Tomorrow night tune in for the primetime oscar special, with Halle Berry, Penelope Cruz, Micahael Douglas, and Glenn Close, Big thank you to our friends at Sprint for making the Oscars possible. Sprint wants everyone to go home with a swag bag, the crowd stand up and are completely hysterical. They get 60 days of free Sprint service. Remember do not talk on your phone and drive, if you must, make sure that is hands free. Thanks everyone.

Episode 37: Jerry Seinfeld: The Marriage Ref

Ok, so you’re having a marriage spat; your spouse is driving you up the wall and neither of you will budge, who will you call? How about Jerry Seinfeld? His new show on NBC, The Marriage Ref started last night. He is out to save marriages in America, come on out Jerry. This is kind of exciting to come back to primetime says Oprah. Jerry says there is no place in the world like this, it’s like being inside a feminine body part. Being on the Oprah show is like whitewater oestregen. A lot of feminine energy says Oprah. Oprah asks what made him want to come back to primetime? Jerry says he created a show, he’s been watching all these people making shows and wondered why he couldnt do it too. He wanted to make a show that didn’t depend on him being in it, night after night, not like Oprah’s one-man canoe. Oprah calls herself the lead sled-dog. The show is the idea, he is on it sometimes. The show is based on a difference of opinion with his wife Jessica, a friend of Jessica’s was there and got uncomfortable and said she should go. Jerry said no, you stay and sort this out. He doesn’t remember what the argument was about. Oprah says that arguments are not the thing that they appear to be about. Jerry and Jessica each stated their arguments, the friend listened and in 5 minutes it was sorted out. He said that’s what you need in marriage, a ref. That should be a TV show, said Jessica.

Oprah says that everyone is talking about a big celebrity marriage that is on the rocks, Jerry looks puzzled, Oprah says you know and whispers Tiger Woods. Jerry says oh they’re fine, he thought something happened. Oprah says that a marriage ref could could not come in to that. He says no it’s not funny enough, actually it’s too funny, that’s the problem. Oprah asks his opinion of it, and he says that it proves that golf is boring.  Oprah claps and the crowd applaud. That was his first thought- Woods is dominating the game and has everything you can get from a sport and he is bored out his mind. Oprah asks his opinion on the Jay/ Conan thing. He says he loved it, he loves stupid. He was on the side of smart against stupid, as always, He couldn’t believe it went on for so long. Oprah has always admired Jerry since she interviewed him for the O Magazine. She was complaining about the end of summer, needing some time for herself, and Jerry said “it’s yours to design, Oprah”. And that’s what she’d doing now. Jerry doesn’t think you walk away from a show, most TV is selling a box of air and fluff. He says that there is some nutrition in what Oprah does. Oprah says that she aims for nutrition everyday, and Jerry says not in this one. She says that they will have some nutrition by the end.

The Marriage Ref takes us inside the intimate battles taking part in  America’s marriages. Each week a celebrity panel debate the sides, like Tina Fey, Madonna, Ricky Gervais, but the final say is made by the Marriage Ref, standup comedian Tom Papa. Oprah asks if Jerry and Jessica have their own fighting rules. Jerry hates that Jessica has kicked coffee because she enjoys it. He needs to see her enjoy something, she should have it, she likes it. Tea is not the same, says Oprah. Jerry says tea is like yardwork. Jerry says that the Marriage Ref is very likeable, and the more of him you watch the more you need, it’s a good quality to have. Tom comes in. Oprah thinks that quality is wonderful, that people want you in their house. Tom  says its a nice thing, you don’t want to be the person that everyone is waiting to leave. Oprah asks what he and his wife argue about. Tom has a Kindle and whenever he starts to read it, his wife thinks it’s a neon sign to start talking. Jerry has learned that he has a number of tones.  When he was single, he didn’t have a tone, but now he has many. His wife discovered the first one, when he is parking and his wife is talking he has the car tone, the let me park the car we’ll talk later tone. He says that marriage is a musical. Tom’s tone is all grrr ” I don’t want to talk about this”. Women like to imitate how men talk, they do impressions. The men do the tones of their wives.

They have a new lingo for marriage arguments, “Kitchen Sinking It” is an argument about one issue, when the other throws in every thing that you’ve ever argued about. “Needle Across the Record Moment” is when couples argue and someone says someone so outrageous that it freezes everybody within a 6 block radius. Oprah says what about when someone says the most horrible thing you can think of. Tom says that’s when you take it to the limit, eg I wish you’d be here for breakfast and they say “At least I’m not at the bar sleeping with strippers”. Oprah says alot of men are using the Tiger Woods thing. “At least I…” is a good argument says Jerry.

Last night after the closing of the Olympics, we got a sneak preview of The Marriage Ref. Greg is trying to spice his life up with his wife Dianah by having a stripper pole in the bedroom. They can’t agree who is or is not respecting who. Greg says that it is for both of their gratification, Dianah disagrees. Alec Baldwin voted for the wife. Kelly Rippa sides with the wife, Jerry Seinfeld sided with the husband. Oprah has a show of hands in the audience, bring on the pole just won. Tom says that it’s not cut and dry because the guy wanted to spice things up with his wife, but there is nothing more unattractive than someone who doesn’t want to be on the pole. Greg and his wife are live from Skype. Greg does not accept the judgement, he says that it’s still going to happen. Tom says that it is not going to happen, having met Dianah. She took the doorknob off the bathroom after the show. That is the only place that she can go and have peace and quiet and wait him out until he’s asleep so that she doesn’t have to hear about the pole. Tom says that the program is so great because Dianah will always know that America agrees with her.

Oprah’s viewers sent in video tapes of some of their problems, Teri and Jim from Wausau, Wisconsin have a problem with tortoises in their living room- they have 5 in their home, 2 are almost 70lbs a piece. They have a whole refrigerator dedicated to the tortoises. She scoops their poo out of a paddling pool. Jim rode on the back of a tortoise, Jalopy, in Staten Island zoo as a child. It had a sarcoma and he had surgery  received radiation therapy. It was a life-changing experience, he ended up being a physician specialising in radiation therapy, in large part because of Jalopy. Teri thinks if she grew a shell, she’d be part of Jim’s life forever. They are in the audience. To Jim, the tortoises are like puppies, pets. Jerry asks Teri where she was when this started, it needed to be nipped in the bud. Teri says that unlike children, the tortoises can’t grow up and move away, they can live to be a hundred. Tom clarifies that there are 5. Tom says that when you get married you think that you marry the person that you are attracted to But that’s not it, marriage is a big sloppy mess, you marry inlaws, uncles, etc. This is Teri’s big sloppy mess. He thinks that bizarre as this is, they have created a family with the two of them and the turtles and they have to keep them together. Oprah agrees- she has 5 dogs and couldn’t give one up. Jerry says that dogs are pets, turtles are not. Oprah and Tom think that this is a family. Jerry says that the turtles don’t know that they are there. Tom says that they are expressing themselves too slowly to tell. Jerry says that an animal has to have a face to be a pet, an expressive face. Jim says he loves the turtles as much as they love him. Jerry says I’ll bet, zero. Oprah says that maybe they are using them for love and shelter. Jim says they love him. Oprah and Tom say that there needs to be discussion about future tortoises. Jerry says that they don’t need to go to the pet store, they are in the pet store.

Thurday nights at 10pm on NBC, Jerry says that all marriages have ongoing spats which go on and on. Emily from North Carolina has been losing sleep- her husband Will sleeps on the screened in porch in 17 degree weather. He urinates in a frozen blue bucket at night. They slept in the bed together for the first 6 years of their marriage, but the last two years he’s been on the porch at night. He loves to sleep out under the stars hearing the creek. They have a 2 year old and she wants to spend time together. He has dreams of the Appalachian trail, which he has decided to bring to the backyard. Jerry says that he loves the “under the stars” thing, but he’s on a porch with a roof, there’s no stars, in 4 seconds you’re asleep anyway. He say Will is out of his mind, he needs to go to camp with the other kids. The couple join them by Skype. Jerry says that they need to compromise and  sleep together at least some of the time. Will says that the bed creaks and he gets up to go to the bathroom and his wife gets upset if he misses the toilet or leaves the seat up, so now he has a bucket outside. Oprah asks if everything else is ok in their marriage, they say yes. Tom asks who empties the bucket. Jerry asks why is he  going in  a bucket- Oprah says for the compost pile. Tom says that when you’re married, few people enjoy the actual sleeping in the same bed part, he snores, his wife talks. Kings and queens used to sleep in separate quarters and meet for shared time. Using a bucket outside, Gary is no king. Tom says that they need to worry about what they are doing to their son’s perceptions of things. He says Will has to get back in the bed as the creaking is not nearly as bad as the bucket.

Sonia and Rob are from London and they sent in a tape- Rob opens things then opens another without finishing the first. He wants fresh all the time, he does the same with toilet rolls, He likes to use a good metre of toilet paper per wipe, and at the end of the roll, quite frankly there’s not enough left. He doesn’t throw it out incase Sonia wants to use it. They are on Skype. Sonia thinks that Rob should finish what he started. Oprah says that she is to the last drop. Tom hates that moment when you have to get the bit out the bottom of the jar. He doesn’t understand the toilet paper thing. Oprah says that Stedman went to get a new jar of almond butter and she wanted him to microwave the end of the jar that was there to get the last spoonful. Oprah knows how Sonia feels. Jerry says his advice is don’t be such a good accountant- don’t count everything, she’s playing accountant. She can get her own peanut butter. Tom as the   ref makes the final call, and lets Rob win. Jerry says that this will not help anyone. On the show, they are not trying to do serious issues, they are just trying to have a laugh. The couples have to love each other. Jerry loves being married and has found that now the relationships with his male married friends have deepened. Single friends think they are in a relationship; Jerry says that they are playing wiffleball and he is in Iraq. Oprah laughs.

Oprah asks Jerry about Blackberry issues which started with their shared producer. Jerry can’t do the creepy head down thing where people are reading their Blackberry and looking at you with one eye. There is a need for Blackberry etiquette- when someone is talking you cannot check your Blackberry, period. Its like going to the hardware store when you have to wait while you are being served because the phone rings- you should prioritise real humans over virtual humans. He does not text or talk on the phone while he drives. He used to, but he lost a frind in a fatal accident who was on a phone. Tom had a headset through his iPhone which was more dangerous than talking. He now uses Bluetooth. Jerry and Tom are gven the pledge to sign.  Oprah thanks them. It is a good thing says Jerry. Oprah says that it took us a long time to do this for drunk driving, and she wants to make it so that no more people have to die. Jerry says that Oprah is the only person who can do this, because it has to become a collective conscience thing, a what are we doing? Oprah thanks him and reminds that The Marriage Ref is on this Thursday at 10pm/ 9pm Central on NBC.

Episode 36: Oprah’s Wowie-Kazowie Auction

It’s Friday and Oprah has to tell us that she did something she was dreading, she gets anxiety just thinking about cleaning out her closet- she did it and cleaned out her closet. How many of us are hanging on to size 8’s that you’re not able to fit in any more? She decluttered, the March issue of O Magazine is all about decluttering. Creative director of O Magazine , Adam Glassman, held her hand. You need someone uunrelenting to hold your hand and help you through. Adam says that Oprah was one of his most difficult clients as she was so anxious. Over 150 of Oprah’s handpicked items are going from her closet to eBay, they are one the stage, and Adam says he knows that Oprah wants to go back and sort through the stuff. Proceeds go to her girls in Africa at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy. The first class is about to graduate in 2011, and so she needs to use the money from her shoes to put the girls through college.

Here is what is up for bid, take a look- the crowd applaud. A Carolina Herrera dress that she wore with her interview with the cast of The Secret Life of Bees. Adam says even if it’s pricey, give it to a friend or sell it if you haven’t worn it for two years. The pants that Oprah wore to interview Lisa Marie Presley are fabulous, but a size 8. Oprah says she’s not getting there again but she keeps hoping. Adam says that it’s the rule; if it doesn’t fit you now then it has to go. If you want them as inspiration, hang them up as closet art. Oprah has a collection of pocketbooks from the stage when she had visions of herself as a lady who lunches saying dahhling really, but she never had a chance to go to lunch. The truth is she is a roomy tote girl. Adam calls it fantasy dressing. Oprah received shoes from Jessica Seinfeld  in a size 11, and she realised that she’s been wearing the wrong size all this time. She’s clearing out all the size 10’s and 10 1/2’s. Oprah finds a Chanel shoe that would still fit, but Adam says that she can’t wear ankle straps. Adam says that everything in your closet should promote joy, beauty and usefulness. If you don’t feel that then you should purge. Oprah doesn’t like to waste things, if she knows someone else will benefit, she’ll feel better. The official jacket of the Chicago Olympic delegation that they wore to Denmark- Oprah says that she would hang on to it if they had won their Olympic bid. Adam says if something brings up bad memories, then you should purge it. The black and white blouse that Oprah wore to surprise Jamie Foxx and Sidney Poitier. She loves it, but Adam says that she has duplicates and she hasn’t worn it for three years. Oprah says she feels the same anxiety for getting rid of t-shirts, it’s not just expensive things. The eBay auction starts on Monday and will run for ten days, all the money goes to her school in Africa. The starting bid on each item is $100 and to get the ball rolling eBay is giving a $100 gift card to everyone in the audience. They cheer. Happy bidding everyone.

The March issue of O Magazine is all about decluttering. Now that Oprah has purged, they can get more things. Adam’s is going to show his 5 must-haves for Spring using members of the audience. Once you purge you restock with a list. These trends for spring will last a long time, they are not trendy one-season items.

  1. Spicy colors look good on everyone, they are warming on all. Saffron and paprika are the new neutral.
  2. Every one should have  a glitzy top to dress up jeans or wear with a pencil skirt
  3. The easy jacket- the new suit is seperates, looser and relaxed, like a boyfriend jacket
  4. The printed jersey dress. Oprah says that she’s not buying it. She doesn’t like prints, the person from the audience like the dress she’s wearing, there’s a print for everyone and jersey is comfortable, easy to pack and feels like pajamas.
  5. The utility jacket is a cross between a  military jacket and a safari jacket- Adam is loving this look. He and Oprah love all of J Crew’s stuff, especially the jacket. The masculine jacket over a feminine outfit adds some fun.

Oprah likes the idea of making a list and not buying clothing impulsively. It happens and becomes wall art. Oprah says its the fantasies we have of who we want to be. She wants to be a lady who lunches, but she eats everyday at her desk where no one cares if she has a pocketbook or not. Oprah thanks Adam and the ladies from the audience.

Jimmy Fallon is chiming in on Fridays Live from the Olympics in Vancouver. They say hello. He’s reading the new issue of O Magazine, he says he loves Vancouver and the Olympics. He has a leather bag full of dirty laundry to add to the auction. Oprah asks him what he thinks of the whole Jay versus Conan debate. He concentrated on his show and is happy to still have a job. He loves them both and is sure that it’ll sort out.  Conan is doing horrible and has a beard now, he’s still funny says Jimmy. Oprah asks him if he’s worried about his losing his job, he says no, has she heard anything? Oprah says that she heard Conan tweeted that he interviewed a squirrel in his backyard then went to commercial break. Jimmy says that he was supposed to be on that show but got bumped by the squirrel. Oprah asks what he finds funny- a good joke, someone falling over, someone falling over then trying to get back up and falling over again. Oprah asks if he was the funny kid in class or the one who was always in trouble? He says a little of both; in his 8th grade yearbook the prediction said that Jimmy Fallon will most likely replace David Letterman. Really, says Oprah. I swear says Jimmy, he principal was Nostradamus so that probably had something to do with it. He never thought he’d host a show but its so great, unbelievable fun. Great music, new bands, comedians, talking to Oprah, it’s fantastic. His 1 year anniversary  is coming up, 198 shows. Oprah says he should give her a call when he has 4374, which is where she is at now. Jimmy says that he has a great show coming up, Hall & Oates and Robert from the twilight movies who they are making fun of, Robert the Bother. Oprah hears that he does a great Neil Young impression- he picks up his guitar that was in his bag, and he’s going to do Pants on the Ground from American Idol. He sings, plays guitar and harmonica. He says that he can do Justin Timberlake going green. He sings of recycling. Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, weeknights on NBC, congratulations on a year Jimmy.

The Winter Olympics are wrapping up on Sunday and their own Ali Wentworth is in Vancouver to meet some of the stars. She is so excited to meet Shani Davis who is going to teach her how to speedskate, he’s coming any minute now and she has a huge crush on him. He skates, she holds on to his jacket behind. She falls over and the crowd gasp. She asks to see his medals. She goes to do some skeleton with John Montgomery of Canada. He shows her how to run beside it and dive on. He pushes her by the feet, she thanks him. They drink a beer on the ice. With the US women’s curling team she asks what curling is- it’s shuffleboard on ice. They show her how to throw the rock and sweep. She says the floor is clean. She says it’s so hard to do, and that’s why she plays bridge. Johnny Weir is going to teach her how to figure skate. He loves her artistic fingers… she’d like to do a full axel, he says that may be a little early. She curtsys, he says no,… smooth. They agree to go shopping.

Ali joins the studio by Skype. Oprah says Ali is such an adventurous woman. Ali says she gets sore from doing the dishes so all the sports put her in bed for the week. She’s glad Oprah got rid of the Manolo’s because she’s bought her some Olympic slippers which are cute for everyday with jeans. Oprah asks how she got the speedsuit on- Ali finds Crisco is tacky, but fish oil.. or 8-9 people  around who can help you is good too. Once she got it on, she realised that Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce wear things like that all the time, just to go shopping. Oprah says that when Ali danced with the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders that was the most daring thing she’s ever seen, and then putting on this uniform. Adam says that Ali’s one of those women who says yes to life. Ali agrees, that’s why she’s married to whom she’s married to- she would have said yes to anyone- seize the day and all that. She’s an arts and crafts girl not a sporty spice so it was fantastic. They have video of her ziplining across Vancouver with Jonny Weir. Yes to life, says Oprah. Ali says to all the ladies out there, don’t go on a zipline with a minidress, its’ not cute for the people below. Oprah asks if she’s still wearing her Olymic stuff? Ali says she feels it will never go out of style with the 2010 logo. She particularly liked the green ice dance outfit, it’s perfect with a utility jacket and flats for carpool pickup or going to the bank. Oprah says yes with the little jacket- Ali says it’s a feel good sort of outfit. Oprah asks about the olympic crush, Ali thinks the speed skater is the most gorgeous, sweetest, whitest teethed person she’s ever met. She hasn’t had the urge to tell anyone that her marriage band is a friendship ring in ten years. She was like a schoolgirl, there was no reason to hold onto his buttocks when skating, that was all her. He’s a Chicago boy. The crowd cheer. Ali says that he’s not married, he doesn’t have  a girlfriend and she wants to set Gayle up with him.

Mo’Nique was nominated for best supporting actress for her role in Precious. Gabourey Sidibe was nominated for best actress. Only in America can you go from unknown college student to Academy nominated actress overnight. Precious is up for 6 Academy Awards including best director for the brilliant Lee Daniels, welcome Lee. Oprah says that when he was directing it, had he any idea that this would happen? He thought it would go straight to DVD. It’s been quite a journey. Oprah thinks that (award nominated) Jeffrey Fletcher did a great job as the screenwriter. What was it about Saphire’s novel Push that made him think this could be a movie, because when Oprah read it in 1996, she never would have thought that it would be a movie? He says that it’s truth, it’s honest, it reminded him of home. Oprah asks if he grew up that way? He said yes, without the frying pan. He knew all these girls and people, it was a very personal story. Oprah remembers the Academy Award lunch for The Color People and being told enjoy the lunch, take the biscuit, because you’re not going to win the academy award. She took the biscuit and bronzed it, she still has it, but she heard that Lee was on the carpet crying. He was crying because Gaby was with him and they’d written a scene where she was on the red carpet and he looked over his shoulder and there she was. Was it art repeating life or life repeating art? It was a moment. Oprah asks how they chose Gaby- over 400 girls came in, and he always looks for the truth, at 7-11’s and bus stops. Gaby came in and talked  after the audition. Unlike the ten girls that were down to the wire, Gaby could articulate this role. Oprah says that’s what is so wonderful, only in America could this happen that this college student can sit in the Academy Awards and her  name will be called in the same breath as one of the best actresses of all time, Meryl Streep. It make Oprah say she’s going to cry. Amazing. Oprah asks what 6 nominations feeels like? Lee says it’s guttural, he started crying, he was on his knees thanking god. With Monsters Ball they got two but that was as producer whch is a different headspace. He says that he is friends with all his fellow director nominees but the media makes it into a competition. Oprah says didn’t she tell him that the whole ride is so fine? Is a party, they are so supportive of each other, they’ve learned so much,  its a kumbya. Oprah asks how it will feel to have his name called with the others- Spielberg told her years ago, regardless of what happens there is that one moment when the names are called and you’re all please Jesus and then you’re all is my face on straight. At the luncheon, Lee said they all gathered around and he asked to hold hands. Cameron says here’s Daniels with his Baptist kumbya. He said not at all,he just wanted to say that this has been the best time of his life and he has learned so much from all of them and he thinks that they all deserve to win. Oprah says that’s good, the crowd applaud. Precious is still in theaters and is a movie that you have to see, says Oprah.

Stay off your phone in the car. The countdown to the Oscars is on, just over a week away on March 7th, don’t miss the Oprah Oscar primetime special . This show is like no other, Barbara is great and she is the queen of all things, but on this special, Halle Berry and Penelope Cruise sit down together and interview each other. Golden Boy Ben Affleck sits down with his good friend and actor nominee Jeremy Renner from Hurtlocker and they realise interviewing is not as easy as it looks. The billion dollar cast of Avatar comes together for an interview, and if you havent seen Fatal Attraction for a while- Oprah watched it last night- take another look at it- Michael Douglas and Glenn Close sit own for the first time ever to interview each other as to how it was to make the film, including the steamy sex scene. Wow, says Oprah, tune in at 10pm for the Oscar Special on Wednesday night. Take the no phone zone pledge, and thanks to Progressive Insurance for helping spread the word. Oprah says that they need more people behind them . Have a great weekend everybody.

Episode 35: Kirstie Alley: Inside Her Big, Big Life

So, she really is an open book about her up and down weight-loss, wacky lifestyle and non-existent sex life, and that is why we love her. Just when we think we know it all, she has something new up her sleeve and that is why we love her. Come on out Kirstie Alley. The crowd go wild. Oprah and Kirstie hug.

OK, says Oprah, she can tell that Kirstie has lost weight because she has her strut on. When you loose 20lbs you start that strut thing. Kirstie says she’s working on it. The tabloids are obsessed about her weight, so Kirstie has made it into a new series. She says that she is good at making lemonade out of lemons. She says that everyone focuses on the before and afters, and she wants to focus on the everyday, what really happens. Oprah talks of the grazing moment in front of the refridgerator. Kirstie says that everyone focuses on the befores and afters when you diet in the public eye- remember the bikini- Oh God, says Kirstie. The new reality show is what happens in between. Cameras follow her wherever she goes; never one to hide in the shadows, she’s coming our swinging with cameras of her own to film the paparazzi. Her quest to reach the size that’s right for her is the focus of Kirstie Alley’s Big Life, her new A&E reality show. Along for the ride are Lily and Drew, Kirstie’s two teenagers. Her loyal assistant Kelly and assistant in training Kyle have their work cut out for them. Add to the cast Kirstie’s own wild kingdom of 25 animals. Her handyman Tim becomes her chubby buddy, as he’s otherwise a bad influence.

Oprah asks why do a reality show when Kirstie always says that the cameras bother her? Kirstie wanted to control them- there are usually 10 paparazzi outside her house at any moment, but when they are filming there are none- so you don’t film their license plates. Oprah asks if it’s been cathartic? Kirstie says that it has been joyous, actually, she talks of the poem Invictus with the last two lines  I am the master of my faith and the captain of my soul. Kirstie says that she had forgotten that she is the captain of her soul. Oprah asks how she can forget that? She’s Kirstie Alley, living in Hollywood, Nate did her kitchen… Kirstie says that it’s hard not to succumb to the pressures around you as a celebrity because it’s so open. She loves being open, but you get so vulnerable when it’s too open, its hard and you can start seeking approval. Oprah asks why is it different this time, because cameras following her around aren’t a big enough reason to loose weight. Kirstie says that she knows she can’t use the F word on Oprah, but she doesn’t give a f- (beep). You don’t, says Oprah. No, says Kirstie. Once she realised who she is- the girl with 2 beautiful children, a great career in acting, all these awards and friends and families and  her health. She just thought who are all these (beeeeeep) who are trying to bring her down and make her less? They’re not going to do it again. The crowd cheer. They show footage from Kirstie’s show of a photographer taking pictures of her in her garden- and the photo landed on the front page of a tabloid a couple of weeks later. Oprah says that is not the sort of photo that you want on the front page. Kirstie says you don’t know what to do, you’re already fat then they pad you with a bush in front of your stomach. Then youll be in the grocery line the next day and people will say you’ve done well and lost weight. She says that it is cathartic, because you have to face yourself. Oprah asks if Kirstie is relieved when other celebrities are going through things to take the pressure off her? Kirstie says she is in good company. Kirstie hates the paparazzi, she says that she’s not nice to them. If she’s at a restaurant or event that’s appropriate, but when they shoot her kids, who they’ve been stalking since they were babies, it makes her mad. And they are looking for shots of her being angry and the best way to do that is to shoot photos of her kids. Oprah says she can’t imagine how it is to have cameras following you, although she is going to do it for the last year of the Oprah show, how is it? Kirstie says she thinks Oprah will like it, the first few days she hated it but she was the producer and so she couldn’t cancel. Its a hybrid between a film and a talk show. They are so everywhere that Kirstie makes an announcement over the intercom that someone needs to get out of the bathroom when she needs to go. Oprah reminds her to take the mic off.

They show footage of her being weighed and disputing the amount, she asks for the amount in British stone as it sounds like less weight- she only needs to lose 6 stone. Oprah asks her if 90 lbs of weightloss is the goal; yes. Oprah asks why a weight and not a body thats right for you. Kirstie says she took some of Oprah’s advice that she normally doesn’t take, but she doesn’t know yet where that magic point is where she will feel vibrant and alive and beautiful. Kirstie says she’s 59, she’s been fat for 5 years of her life but you’d think she’s been fat for 50 years of her life. At 140, 145, 150lbs she was good. Oprah says that working out adds bulk, Kirstie asks Oprah what the number should be. Oprah says its a feeling, not a number. Kirstie says that when she struts around for most of the day, she’s done. She’s been doing this for 7 weeks and lost 20ish pounds. It’s her decision but her muse is Mr Jamie Foxx,  Kirstie likes to imagine herself with Mr Jamie Foxx- she disrobes and thinks yeah, or Jamie turn the light off. She loves Jamie Foxx, she Twitters about him, because he is so talented; brilliant actor, musician, funny… Oprah doesn’t know if Kirstie is aware of it, but Oprah and Jamie are special friends. Kirstie is not aware of that. Oprah says that he is a dear friend, and she got a Valentine from him and he sends the best presents. Kirstie says maybe when he sees this show he’ll send her a present. Oprah says for her birthday he sent this amazing, one of a kind statue of her mentor, and years ago he had an amazing portrait done of her by this great artist. Kirstie says she is so happy for Oprah. Oprah says that anybody who is going to be with Jamie needs to be able to share, as there will be other girls. Kirstie says she doesn’t envision matrrying him, but maybe being in Italy with him for three weeks. Oprah asks what she’d most like to do with him, Kirstie nodds wistfully and is silent. She says that her daughter is sitting in the front row but that her muse could be her icebreaker. Oprah says that she heard Kirstie told People magazine that she wants a bootie call from Jamie. Yes, says Kirstie along with 3 million other women. Oprah says that she and Jamie have a special relationship, but she desn’t want a booty call. A flatscreen TV slides into place on the set behing them, with Jamie Foxx live by satellite.

The crowd whoop, Kirstie turns around and screams, she covers her eyes and says oh my God. Jamie says that he will be a bootie call with Oprah’s permission. Kirstie goes to kiss him and touch the screen. Jamie says that he won’t go too wild as her kids are in the audience. He says she is all beautiful, stop worrying about what she weighs, just focus on “being you, wonderfully you”. Kirstie says that’s why she loves him. Kirstie tells him that she loves him because he is not just good looking, he’s talented, generous, thoughtful , funny… Jamie sings that he’d like to drive down her alley tonight… Oprah says that she told Kirstie that Jamie was going to come to the studio but he’s working on his album. He says that he ia making some beautiful love music, so we can all have love and make love. Kirstie says she knows somewhere where he could use that music. Oprah asks Kirstie what she means when she calls herself a Foxhound. She won’t say it in front of Jamie. Jamie was aware of this crush because years ago he went to Kirstie’s dressing room and expressed what a fan he was. He is always a fan and is rooting for her, he says they can do a bootie call segment as a weightloss motivator. Kirstie says he can be her icebreaker. Oprah thanks Jamie for having her on his radio show, the Foxhole. Jamie makes a plug for his show, says they pass out gift baskets for everyone on Monday that they talked about on Friday. Kirstie wants to go on the Foxhole, Jamie says anytime. Oprah thanks Jamie, says that she is friends with both Jamie and Kirstie, Jamie wishes Kirstie good luck on the show and says that even if she doesn’t loose any weight, she is still beautiful. Kirstie thanks him and blows kisses.

They show footage of Jim, Kirstie’s handyman having dinner with Kirstie. She hasn’t been on a date-date for ten years. She didn’t want anyone telling her how to raise her children, but now they are older she would consider a boyfriend. Her motivation for weightloss is hating the way that she feels. Oprah clarifies the ten years issue- its been 10 years since she was in love. She wasn’t open to someone else’s interpretation of how to raise her kids, and she’s had so much fun being a mother and raising her kids. She’s an older mother and she wanted to spend quality  time with them. She’s having a ball being at home with them while she does her show. Her daughter Lily in the audience says that she enjoys having the cameras there now. Kirstie says they film 4 days a week and they leave at 6pm, so they have a lot of time without the cameras.

She is loosing the weight this time, she created a weightloss line and she is using that, her new company Organic Liason is something she’s very proud of. The Rescue Kit focuses on suppotrting the body 24-7. they are a calorie based program. They are trying to get people to liase from regular food to clean food. She gets up at 7am, she’s a mono-eater so she has the same thing every day- an organic English muffin with an egg on it. Contrary to popular whatever she says, throwing away the magazine, she is very healthy with low blood pressure, cholestorol etc. She drinks Rescue Me, then eats something at 10am, a little Greek yogurt with Stevia and cinnamon- its like the richest yummiest thing in the world. Dinner is often barbeque chicken- 3 wings with skin, Oprah says that a skinless wing is a pitiful thing. Kirstie likes that you still have to work at them. She’s trying to eat less meat. She’ll eat a big salad which is a new thing for her. She’ll eat Green Soup 3 times a day, 60 calories a cup, the recipe is on their website, www.organicliason.com. The soup contains all kinds of organic greens, pureed, a chef from Australia helped her to formulate it. Oprah says that now Kirstie has created her own weightloss program, she doesn’t have to be a spokesperson for anyone else. Kirstie says that she speaks for herself.

On a previous show, Oprah hears that Kirstie has a long list of people who want them to decorate her house. She does, she can decorate a whole house in 4 hours but they can’t be there, she doesn’t want their opinion. Lots of emails came in asking Kirstie to do their house- she goes down to a family in Texas. Stephanie and David Summers show her around and promise to give her the keys to their house. It’s all beige except for one navy room, that they say is decorating gone bad. They decorated that room after being inspired by Kirstie on the Oprah Show. They swear that Kirstie can paint whatever color she likes in their room. Kirstie says that she is the fastest decorator in the world. Oprah can’t wait to see it, she hasn’t watched the footage yet. Kirstie doen’t like sayings on the wall, a room should make you relaxed, don’t do business or paperwork in your bedroom. Kirstie goes to Lowes and picks up everything she needs. She heads to Crate and Barrel, then back to the house with the construction crew. She gives the bathroom a facelift. By the next morning, it’s starting to come together. Kirstie is happy. The big reveal- the couple say Oh my word, Wow, wow, wow, that is too cool. They are very excited that the bathroom and bedroom are so beautiful and amazing, they realise the carpet is new and Stephanie starts crying. They really appreciate it. Kirstie says enjoy it, make another baby in here.

Stephanie and David join them by Skype, they haven’t yet made another baby. They like the bed, its beautiful and comfortable, they love it, love the color. Kirstie decorates fast as she has no time for bad ideas, all decorators have to be a little ditsy. Oprah wishes the Summers’ many happy days and nights and tells them to go ahead make a baby.

Kirstie Alley’s Big Life debuts on March 23rd on A & E. Over 135,000 have taken the no-phone zone pledge including almost every one of the Minford High School in Minford, Ohio. Episode 32: That’s Incredible!

Amazing. Let me just take it in, says Oprah. She  knew they were building this down here but she just came down now. This is a true chocolate lovers dream- the set today is made from 100% pure Godiva chocolate. Godiva Godiva Godiva says Oprah. Everything is edible except Oprah’s name; the walls, the fireplace, oh my gosh thats so great with the hand carved milk chocolate logs… Oh my, those are hand carved. These are chocolate? The chandelier is chocolate, wow. The books are chocolate , the frames, the floors and the painting of the Chicago skyline is chocolate. Wowie kazowies. Oprah says they better eat this when the show is over, the crowd cheer. Everybody should come on up and have a chocolate good time – they made it while wearing plastic gloves-and then they’ll be so high they’ll be swinging from the chandelier. Even the chairs are chocolate. Larry Abel and Raymond McCallister are the Godiva designers responsible for this extraordinary vision. Here’s what it took to create this.

800 boxes filled with 52 different kinds of Godiva chocolate were sent half way across the country to the Harpo studios. More than 15000 pieces brought this indulgent vision to light. They molded the vision from dark, white and milk chocolate, truffles and ganache. Chocolate is the glue that holds it together. Oprah says that love is in the details. They spent over 20 hours stringing together chocolates with string and wax thread to make the chandelier. 1400 man hours later… it takes a village, it takes a big one. Oprah says that she wishes we could smell it.

She asks the designers how you know what is inside a box of Godiva chocolates, they say the guide tells you everything, but when you work with it as much as they do, they know the range inside out. Oprah bites into one and says that it is so good. She asks what was the hardest part. Where do they start… stringing the individual chocolates as beads for the chandelier, one by one; the mosaic walls that they never know how they’ll look so sometimes they start over. The chocolates should last the duration of the show, even under the lights, unless as Raymond says, the audience gets really hungry. Oprah promises the audience a chocolate eating good time after the show. Thanks to Larry and Raymond and the team from Godiva. Oprah is going to take the chocolate book and put it in her freezer, how about that?

Moving on, before this set melts, this hour is full of entertaining stories to make you say wowie kazowie. This man has the fastest fingers on the planet, he’s been called the David Beckham of classical music. This David, DAvid Garrett  was recently named the fastest violinist in the world by the Guiness Book of Records. He performed The Flight of the Bumblebee in a blistering 66 seconds. His repertoire ranges from Mozart to Metallica, bridging classical to rock. David Garrett is here to perform his world record rendition of The Flight of the Bumblebee. The crowd go crazy, Oprah thanks him and says wow. Even the bumblebees are beating their wings for him. If you do the math, he plays 13 notes an second. He started at age 4 and just practised alot. Oprah asks if there is a lot of pressure to stay the best and says that most important is the pressure he puts on himself to remain the best and perform the best he can.

Setting the stage for our next guest, Rob Surette is a rapid fire portrait painter; in  less than 2 minutes he will paint a 6 foot painting of a famous person. David will play some atmospheric music to set some ambience, this is called Summer. David plays, Rob paints, the clock counts down. The painting is of Albert Einstein. Oprah laughs. Fantastic, she says and the audience claps. With a minute to go, Oprah did not know who the picture was of, but she asks Rob, how do you do that? As a kid he always won the art fair and his grandmother was very supportive. Now he wants to inspire the world. Oprah says her heart was pounding. More information can be found on Rob’s speedy portrait painting on Oprah.com, and David’s self-titled CD is out now.

If you think this looks crazy you might be right. They call themselves birdmen for obvious reasons. They wear special suits which fill up with air so that they have wings, then they fly through the air at up to 140mph. These men hone their technique with up to  a hundred of flights a year. It’s dangerous hobby requiring years of practice, bravery and skill;  they sometimes come dangerously close to mountains. For the few who practice this very extreme sport, they says there is no high like it. JT Holmes is one of the original birdmen. He was going to join the show by Skype, but the power went down in his neighborhood in Paolo Alto, so he joins us by phone. Oprah has one of the suits with wings. Oprah asks why he does it- JT replies why wouldnt he want to do it? Extreme sports are so popular because you get to catch air and go fast. Oprah says that on the tape he looks like she does in her flying dreams. He likes to get as close to the walls of cliffs as possible- he like to follow the beautifully unique mountain line. He lost his best friend to this sport which is a constant reminder to be extremely careful. Oprah says that he looks like Avatar, and he says that he will go see the film.   Thanks JT, thanks so much

The next performance, is one that you have to see to believe. The Russian Bar Trio high flying acrobatic act. Few people have been able to master this act which requires intense skill and concentration. Two men hold a bar while a woman performs acrobatics leaping up in the sky, tumbling and landing on the beam. Oprah watches open-mouthed. Wow wow wow wow wow wow says Oprah, that’s great, that’s fantastic. They are from Canada, Christine says that she has the easy part and holding her up is the hard part. One of them says its like a grand piano hitting their shoulder every time she lands- her body weight plus g-force is like 500 pounds of weight each time. Wow says Oprah, that’s why you’re out of breath. Thank you.

One look will tell you she’s not your typical teenager. Marvadene “Bubbles” Anderson is 6′10″. She is  the tallest 16 year old girl on the planet, and she’s still growing. The girls basketball coach at the Rutgers Prep School signed her on the spot . As long as she can make the basket, all she has to do is turn and make the shot. Off court she is adjusting to being a tall teenager. She wants to tell all the tall people who feel so alone, be happy and love yourself and people will love you.

Bubbles and Oprah hug. So one of the things that is so interesting to Oprah, people are always saying as teenagers that they were always trying to fit in. Bubbles says fitting in places physically can be a problem, but not with other people as she has a good personality. She says America is a great place to be tall  because you can use your height for more things than in Jamaica. Here you can play volleyball, basketball whatever. When she was 12-13, she was 6′4″. She felt bad because she started playing sports at 14 because she felt awkward. But she found out that being tall means that she can do stuff that’s cool. She’s not dating yet, she thinks it may be hard. Oprah asks how tall do doctor’s think that she’ll grow to be?   7′1″. She loves being tall here and she’s doing great things with her height. Oprah says that America is the greatest country in the world, that we can do great things here. Bubbles lives with family friends in New Jersey so she can attend Rutgers Prep, her mom and sister are still in Jamaica. They are very happy that she is strong here and in a new environment. Oprah asks how she makes people at ease with her height- she always answers their questions with a smile, she’s always smiling. She was signed on the spot for basketball at Rutgers Prep, she only started playing 4 months ago. She wants to be a pediatrician and  a professional basketball player . Her coach is in the audience and she says that she could be headed to the WNBA. Her potential is incredible and if she continues to work at her goals, she’ll end up at the WNBA. Bubbles says that teenagers are all different but that people shouldn’t feel left out, everyone should embrace what they have because god gave it to them for a reason. If they appreciate themselves they’ll be appreciated in return. Oprah says she loves what Bubbles said about loving yourself and then people will love you, she says Bubbles is a smart girl. They grab hands. The name Bubbles came from her jovial personality as a baby.

It was one of the most incredible thing Oprah had ever seen, Planet Earth gave s a unique view of our world. The BBC and the Discovery Channel are back with a new series, Life, which features animals great and small, ugly, really ugly  and charming, industrious and fearsome. The camera crew spent 4 years tracking across the globe  following animal doing things never before captured on film. Like komodo dragons stalking and killing  a water buffalo. One camera man spent 3 weeks hiding in a camoflage shack to capture the never before seen mating ritual of the rare Vogelcop Bowerbird. Its a series as monumental,  breathtaking and magical as life itself. Incredible. Oprah liked Planet Earth so much she asked to narrate the whole series; be sure to watch Life starting on Discovery on March 21st.

3 years ago on the Oprah Show, they met the world’s tallest dog, Gibson. Unfortunately he passed away last summer at age 7, he had a great life but left giant shoes to fill. Meet George. His owners call him Giant George, he is 7′3″ from nose to tail, he is 100 lbs larger than the average great dane, he’s 245 lbs. If he steps on you it hurts. His bed is a queen size bed, originally he had a dog crate but he outgrew that,  then he had a twin bed and outgrew that. He eats 110lbs of dog food a month, they spend $250-300 a month on his food and treats. He can eat a treat out he bottom of the sink. His bladder is amazing he can go a whole day and night without going out. At the dog park he gets comments all the time asking if he’s a horse. The Guiness Book of Records  measured  George last week- he is the biggest dog that they have ever seen. The record to beat was 42.25″ high and he was 43″. George is here with his human dad, David. Wow says Oprah, that is big. That’s a big guy. They sit, George sits on the sofa. At the state fair, David said that his dog was bigger than the lions. He is a sweet and beautiful dog, his life expectancy is only 7 or 8 years, He drives around in a golf cart which he loves. Oprah says look at his sweet eyes and  thanks to them for coming in.

It started as dorm room fun for two tech savvy students, Sam and Kurt. They take a song and Sam sings every single part separately and then they add some digital magic, voila. It’s all Sam singing an entire song at once. Their You Tube sensation got 5 million hits, it has caught on internet fire. Singing his Michael Jackson medley here is Sam, Sam and Sam. Oprah can not believe it, they hug. They were just sitting in their dorm, and they wondered if people would watch their videos and they have, they have loved their videos. This is what they do in their spare time.  Kurt comes up on the stage- he was recording a duet with Sam and a girl and the girl flaked out at the last minute so Kurt suggested that Sam did it this way. Sam is a math major at Yale and Kurt is a Classical Greek major. Sam says that this has improved his time management and it all works out somehow. That’s too cool says Oprah, thanks to both of them.

Its one of the most popular toys of all times. Etch-a-Sketch artist George Vlosich has made a fine art of drawings on the Etch-a-Sketch done from one single line. Check out these Etch-a-Sketched portraits of Elvis, The Beatles and our President. Some of Georges’ portraits take up to 80 hours. Oprah didn’t know that the Etch-a-Sketch can draw curves, her audience does. Art has always been important to George, when he was 10 he picked up the Etch-a-Sketch and did a picture of the capitol building in the backseat of a car trip to DC. He parents and him couldn’t believe how well it turned out; they show a photograph. It was another way for him to express his creative talent. He made a special artwork for Oprah of her 3 dogs. It’s permanent piece of artwork, people can commission pictures at gvetchedintime.com. Oprah’s image took 15-20 hours. Don’t y’all think that’s amazing says oprah? The crowd applaud, Thanks very much it’s a great gift. Thanks George, thanks Godiva for the incredible chocolate set that the audience will eat with Oprah. Something incredble to do for yourself is to take the no phone pledge with the 120,000 other people who have taken the pledge. Go online now. Now the audience and Oprah go up to the stage and Oprah gives away the chocolate flowers in a vase and the chocolate chess set…

Episode 31: Fridays Live with Shaun White

It’s Friday live in Chicago, Team USA are flying high at the Winter Olympics. NBC’s Matt Lauer  is here live by satellite , Oprah shows Matt her Canadian Olympic mittens which she says are a hot item. Matt says that he is so humiliated that no one can get the Canadian Olymmpic mittens, they have scoured the country far and wide.. and Oprah shows up wearing them. Oprah says she has connections. Matt says that he should have known that. Last week she said her audience members said that she should have some. Matt shows some other hot souvenir items. The opening ceremony garb worn by the US team are very hot- the jackets, scarf and hat. They get a shot of Oprah in the studio and Matt says they might need a bigger hat- Oprah says she has a big ole head. Matt shows the mohawk hat, and says it’s for you Oprah. He shows her the umbrella with a hockey stick handle. Oprah says that is cool but she won’t be wearing the mohawk hat. Oprah asks what Matt’s favorite Olympic moment has been so far. Matt says when Seth Wescott won the snowboard medal coming from so far back and when Canadian Alexandre Bilodeau won the first gold for Canada on Canadian soil, when he stood for the Canadian national anthem. The hottest item in Vancouver is standing next to Matt right now, the men’s figure skating champion Evan Lysacek. The crowd go wild. Oprah says there is dancing in Napaville right now. Oprah asks if he knew when he came off the ice that he had done it? He says he has accomplished what he set out to do, he wanted to have his best performance here in the moment that mattered. It hasn’t begun to sunk in, it feels great. He could have stood on the podium for hours. He keeps reliving it. To the young skaters out there, Evan would like to say that you have tough days and great days as an athlete, but if you are in it for the right reasons, if you really love basketball or football or skating, on the tough days your love of the sport will get you through and push you and motivate you every day. Oprah sings that he looked so beautiful carrying the American flag. Matt will be back at 7am on the Today Show tomorrow. Matt says hats off to Evan, that words like perfection and  flawless are being used to describe his performance last night.

Lindsey Vonn from Minnesota, is here by satellite after winning the women’s gold for downhill skiing. The crowd go wild. Oprah asks Lindsey if it has sunk in- she says no, not at all. She was so overwhelmed with emotion after the event, but it’s amazing. she put the medal on again last night and she can’t believe she has one it seems so surreal. Oprah asks where she’s keeping it? On her nightstand right next to her bed. It is true that she cried for two hours afterwards. Yes, she says it was crazy and she couldn’t stop, she couldn’t say a sentence, there was too much emotion, too much going on, she couldn’t control it. She was thinking that everything she had worked for her whole life had come true. That she finally did it after so much pressure and expectations was more than she ever hoped for. Oprah said we were all heartsick yesterday when she fell, but Lindsey feels good for the Super G. She was disappointed when she fell, she was skiing well and felt that she could have been in contention for a medal, but that’s life. She feels good for tomorrow and she’ll do her best. Oprah says that they have been talking about Lindsey posing for Sports Illustrated. She asks if it’s scarier to be in her swimsuit or speeding down a mountain? Lindsay says in a swimsuit certainly, as you are totally exposed, everything is hanging out there. Oprah says she’s looking good girl, looking good. Thank you Lindsey, and good luck tomorrow. Oprah has some good news from the Hudson Bay Company, not only does Oprah have the mittens, everyone in the studio audience has the mittens. The crowd give a standing ovation, as women distribute the mittens to everyone.

Shaun White is in the studio! He’s known as the Flying Tomato, the animal, the undisputed master of the half pipe. The 23 year old  is one of the superstars of the games, he started snowboarding at age 6 and turned pro at 13. He started to win and win, beating people twice his age. Shaun first won gold in Turino and now he is flying high with multi-million deals, video games, the whole lot. His gravity defying stunts and  his signature red hair, make him one of the most recognisable athletes in the Olympic games. He is a two time gold medalist, he flew all night from Vancouver, come in Shaun. The crowd goes insane. They hug. He gives Oprah the medal to hold and the crowd shouts USA. She says it’s very heavy; he doesn’t know how much it weighs. He says that what is interesting about the medals  is that they are all cut from one piece and if you put them together again there is a picture. They agree that’s cool. Sean says that Matt got Oprah ahat and he did one better and gave Oprah an official Team USA snowboarding jacket. She says thank you, the crowd applaud. Oprah says that Shaun’s signature move is the Double McTwist 1260, she asks him to talk them through it as they watch it. As he takes off he says that it’s all about commitment, the whole trick is blind, he can’t see where he going until the very end. They play it again and slow it down. He has to know he’ll land it before he takes off, right here he is trying to spot his landing. He’s upside down. The edges are marked with blue and he prays he’s on the inside of the blue, not the outside. Oprah asks him how it feels at that moment. He says it’s hard to describe- you plan and dream for this day and everything builds up, It’s like reading a book, once you’ve read a couple of chapters you don’t remember what you have just read. He’s just in it, he can’t describe it. He knows how the bubble at the end feels. Oprah says that it is such a dangerous trick and he really had the gold wrapped up, so why risk it. He’s been working on this trick for 2 years, it’s been his best friend and worst enemy. At the X-Games, he had a spectacular crash.. the crowd whoop. He took a good hit to his cheek and had to bounce back. A lot of people asked why he got back up, but he had to.  He doesn’t give up easily, he got back up, the crowd goes wild. He said it did hurt, it was not his favorite time. He says he has to get straight back up or else it will affect him mentally. He ran immediately back to the top and did the trick. O says that he is the definition of getting back up after a fall. She asks how much he trains- he trains 1-2 hours a day where he does intensive stuff. Oprah asks if he trains in secret. He says that with the Olympics coming up they wanted it to be special so they did the big thing out in the Colorado wilderness. Some of the crowd cheer. Oprah says hello. He was with Red Bull and they did Project X and built a half pipe in the wilderness, only accessible by helicopter or snow mobile. They added a foam pit, the icing on the cake, so he could try tricks and safely land. There were moments learning the trick in the foam and then you actually have to do it… and his hands were shaking.

He says he didn’t think anyone waas watching his air guitar solo during the medal ceremony. Oprah says that everyone feels a great connection to him, and he says he feels connected to us. Oprah asks when he knew that this was his dream. He took every step towards his dream and it happened. Oprah asks if everyone was always supportive. When he first started doing snowboarding, there was no money, no Olympics, no X Games but his parents recognised his talent and pursued it. His mom runs away when he competes because it is too hard to watch. When he is spinning around, he is preparing for the next turn, it’s a mental preparation to find the next wall. He says he’s relaxed and at the top, he has fun and cracks jokes, but at the start gate it’s like a different person, he gets the confidence and, like a horse in the start gate, he’s ready to go. Oprah says she will never get the feeling he has. He says they’ll get  her up there. Oprah says no. Oprah says that millions of girls have a crush on him. He says he had a girlfriend for 4 years who was really supportive of him, but he hasn’t really had time to date or anything. He’s on the road all the time, it’s hard to date him. He has two golds, which is nice, beyond what he can fathom. He’s thinking of 2014 a bit, why would he not want to experience this again? He has met Joe Biden, now he’d love to meet the President. Oprah is pretty certain that is going to happen. Thanks to Shaun and congratulations.

Big news on Wednesday, a judge released 8 of 10 missionaries held in prison in Haiti, where they’ve been there for two weeks. This is what happened. On January 29th, 10 American  missionaries were arrested trying to leave the country with 33 children that they claimed were orphans. They were headed for an orphanage in the Dominican Republic and were charged with abduction and thrown in jail. Haitian authorities launched an investigation and learned that some of the children had parents. But those parents testified that they had willingly handed over their children in the hope of giving them a better life. So on Wednesday, a Haitian judge freed 8 of the 10, and yesterday they came home. Allegations have been made about the group leader, Laura Silsby, with questions about her intentions and financial motives . Jim Allen and his wife Lisa join the studio by satellite from Amarillo Texas. Oprah asks why Jim went to Haiti. After the coverage of the devastation on TV there was a real need for people to help and he has construction skills and experience to help the Haitian people. The trip fell into his lap, and with 2 days notice he was on his way to Haiti. When he first left he didnt know what to expect, he knew he had some skills and just wanted to help.  He says that they travelled around different orphanages in Port-Au-Prince, they met the director of two of the orphanages they visited. They brought out the kids one by one, and said  they had no mother or father and could the group take them to take care of them. They thought that they were taking the children to a temporary orphanage in Dominican Republic. It was a 45 room hotel and they were going to take care of the kids there. He was going to be there for 3-4 weeks then other teams were coming in behind them. He found going to jail to be quite a shock and not what they intended. Oprah says as someone who also works in other countries to help children, she can’t imagine how it is to try and help but be thrown in jail. Jim says that it was hard in jail, but they treated them as well as they could with what they had. They slept on a concrete floor but they had one hot meal a day which was actually good, but there were millions of people out in the street. It was bad for them, but better than for the other people. Lisa, Jim’s wife, was not too worried that he would be coming home soon, but she was concerned with the situation. They couldn’t communicate until Jim could use the attorney’s phone. Oprah says that there are allegations that the group leader planned to make a profit from the kids, to charge big fees for getting them placed. He doesn’t know anything about that, he got no indication of that at all. He hadn’t met the others, except for two,  until he was at Miami airport. but it seemed that people were legitimately concerned about helping the children. Oprah asks if there is any truth that 8 of them signed a note saying that they had been misled by Laura and handed it to the press. He says no, not at all, there is no truth in that. He had no ill feelings towards the Haiti authorities; it was a shock and hard to process but they were treated well. The legal processs is very different to here, but he felt that as soon as the story was told and the facts come out, then they’d be home. It was great to sleep in his own bed. Thank you both.

People magazine calls Lady Antebellum country music’s hottest band and just last month they won a Grammy. They play a song. Oprah says we’ll be right back. Footage plays from Madison WI asking Hilary from  Lady Antebellum  if she wants to play on Oprah, she screaches and cries. The first time they heard their single on the radio, Hillary cried too. Oprah grew up in Nashville, and went to East Nashville High School , and back then, country was country, and what happened? Dave says that they are still writing about the same things, they try to write honest songs about things that they have been through. They are excited that people are gravitating towards them. They write together and sometimes bring in a co writer. Dave will strum the guitar, the other two will mumble something and lay it down. Oprah says that heartbreak makes a lot of good music. Amen to that says Hillary. Lady Antebellum are currently on tour with David McGraw. They are ready to take the pledge, no texting and driving. Sean White has signed his no-phone zone pledge. Thank you very much everyone, have a great weekend.

Episode 26: Happy Valentine’s Day- Oprah Fridays LIVE

It’s Friday and here live in Chicago, if you’re snowed in and watching with the whole family, let’s start with the Superbowl. The Saints won and  Superbowl NVP Drew Brees is here. What a beautiful family, they’re all here, Oprah just saw the baby in the back, who dat cute. Over 106 million people watched the Superbowl, more than any other TV show in history.Did you see the ads? [They play the Oprah sitting between David Letterman and Jay Leno advert]. Gail emailed her after the ad aired saying people think they are superimposed there. Oprah shows picures to show they were all there together, it was a super top secret thing with only a handful of people in the know. They filmed at Dave’s studio in New York, just as Oprah was going in, incognito with a hood on, a woman said Hey Oprah. Jay came in in disguise. Jay and David hadn’t talked for 18 years- everything went away that had happened between them for the last 18 years.

Tonight the Olympics kick off in Vancouver. Matt Lauer will be covering the games for NBC, he joins us via satellite. Oprah says she just saw him with Michael Bublé- he was just inside the chalet, he’s from Barnaby, Vancouver so he just did a couple of songs. Matt apologises if he cries during the set, the bonfire seemed like a good idea but the smoke keeps blowing into his eyes. Matt ran with the torch yesterday, aso did Bublé. Matt said it was maybe the coolest part of his life- you get to wear the cool outfit but you get the pep talk before that says the torch is the greatest symbol of peace in the whole world. He doesn’t care how cool you think you are, when the person carries the flame to you, you turn to jelly. It seemed like an eternity even though it was only 300m, Matt just loved it. Oprah asks if you worry that your hair might catch on fire when the wind blows, Matt shows his lack of hair and says are you kidding me? What’s supposed to catch on fire there? Oprah hears the schedule is hefty- Matt broadcasts live to the East Coast so they fim at 4am Vancouver time. Today is a particularly long day as they just did the show then tonight he’s covering the opening ceremony with Bob Costas. The pageantry and spectacle of the opening ceremony will not be disappointing. He saw it a couple of nights ago and it will end with a big surprise. 7.30 eastern time there’s a warmup then the opening ceremony. For the first time ever this is filmed indoors and the parade of athletes will be at the beginning not the end. Oprah says she watches him and the mornings and last week wore red at his urging. Matt says he wants to be invited to the worst superbowl party ever next year (referencing the advert). Thanks Matt, we’ll be watching the opening ceremonies tonight.

Drew Brees comes to the studio and the crowd go wild. Wow wow wow says Oprah. Its wonderful to see each other. Drew says the moment of winning was surreal and he still has to pinch himself. Oprah just felt that the Saints were going to do it. After all that New Orleans has been through, all the pain and suffering and psychic and spiritual energy, she felt that the Saints would do it. Drew says he never had a doubt, he felt the energy of the country was with them, everyone related to what the team means to the city and what a win would do for them. 106 million people watched Drew step up in the moment that he needed to. Drew says the emotion throughout the game had to reeled in. For the first half or quarter you just have to find a way to calm down, then you tell yourself it’s just aother game and only when it’s over do you allow yourself to reflect. Oprah says she’s heard him say before that its not about the winning but about the journey. For him, he was trying to reflect upon that when he stood on the stand with his son getting the trophy- he tried to stay in the moment. The crowd awws as they show a photo of him holding his son up in the air on the Superbowl night. Drew says it’s special and he’ll remember it for the rest of his life. His son is only 13 months old and he wont remember this. He told his son what an inspiration he is to Drew, and he said he loved him and we did it. little boy. Oprah says that Drew does have the cutest boy in the world. A few years ago when he injured his shoulder and it almost ended his career, Drew has said that it was the best thing to happen to him. Drew says that everyone in their position has been told they can’t do it for whatever reason and sure that’s a motivation. For him, he plays for the people who do believe in him, that’s who he thinks of before every game. His eyes well up when he listens to the national anthem, and thinks of the implications of what he’s doing. Oprah says she has great respect for Peyton Manning, Drew says that they normally meet after the game on the 50 yard line, but that didnt happen this time. But Manning sent him a text afterwards and is a very classy football player. Oprah hopes he didn’t text from the car- it was from the tour bus. Drew also did a commercial where he sang in the shower for Dove for Men. Here are a few extra scenes. The crowd applaud. Dove has a whole new line of products and Oprah says that this is a great way to introduce them. For Drew singing in the shower in front of the cameras was a little out of his comfort zone, it was tense at first then he decided to just have fun. Drew is comfortable in his own skin and enjoyed the experience.

They show the footage of Drew, his son Bailey and his wife Brittany at the Superbowl. Brittany says she felt so stressed out she thought she’d throw up. And Bailey is just like his Dad, so active- so he wants to walk, eat, play, watch the game. Her mom helps during the game, but Bailey helps her calm down and puts things into perspective. She says Drew is great at handling pressure, he can compartmentalise and really focus; then he does his best. They all got to bed about 3.30am, he said to Brittany, did that really happen? It was the culmination of 4 years of hard work.  She said she didn’t know- it looks like a great commercial with all the confetti. The city is unbelieveable right now, there was 40,00 people at the airport and the parade brought out 800,000 in a city of only 400,000. It seems like people from all around the world are identifying with the city and that is just great. The couple are college sweethearts,- she married the quarterback and then he won the Superbowl. Brittany says that it’s been amazing and there have been the ups and downs of his career. She remembers seeing him in the hospital room after his surgery, not knowing if he would ever play again, but God gives you the strength and they prayed about it – and if anyone is going to do it, it would be Drew. She’s so proud of him, all those hours of rehab and the not knowing where they were going to live, she’s just so proud of him. Oprah asks what happens now? Drew says on Valentine’s Day they’ll be in the Bachus Parade for Mardi Gras, their anniversary was the day after the Superbowl, their 7 year anniversary, so they’ll spend some time with family and  take two weeks to have a Valentine’s Day, anniversary celebration. A Saints superfan in Chicago, Chris Rodgers is in the studio, they show footage of his house filled with Saints gear. He cried like a baby when they won. Chris’ lifelong dream is to catch a football from Drew Brees- Drew throws the football and Chris catches it.

1985’s recording of We Are The World plays the show back in from the commercial break. It has been 25 years since Lionel Ritchie wrote We Are The World with Michael Jackson and Oprah’s dear friend Quincy Jones produced it. Two weeks ago they  got together with 80 artists to re-record  the song with all proceeds to go to help the Haiti earthquake. There’s only one Lionel Ritchie and he’s here. Oprah is so excited that he’s going to sing. The crowd clap and scream. He doesn’t know if he can sing this early in the morning. The new video will debut tonight at the opening ceremony at the winter olympics. Nicole was 5 years old when they recorded the original, and now she’s there with her son and Joel. They play an exclusive extract of the new recording- there are artists in 3 different rooms. Pink, Celine Dion, Barbara Streisand, Mary J Blige… all the stars wanted to be apart of it. Last time, Quincy put up a sign that said check your egos at the door. This time, Lionel says the egos lasted about 20 minutes. then all of a sudden when seeing the images from Haiti, the egos stop. They knew what they were there to do. Oprah asks how they assign parts to sing-Lionel says life is wonderful while you’re busy making plans. It happens. They had a list of who would sing what line, and they realised that the new people are nervous. They had 3 seperate rooms, with different cameras and Panavision. They thought it would be a secret, and the stars were Tweeting during the first verse. He’d never seen so much excitement- Tony Bennett and Snoop Dog talking to each other, Little Wayne and Barbara Streisand talking to each other. Oprah has heard the story from Quincy so many times about how they wrote the lyrics to the song and needed the last verse. Lionel tells the story of lying on the floor in Michael Jackson’s room when he spotted a python behind some records. Lionel ran away from the albino python that Michael had mislaid in his room. They wanted Michael in the recording, so he sings his part from the original, and his sister Janet sings along with him. Lionel says everyone stepped up to the plate and it’s beautiful. Oprah asks if women always want him to sing to them when he dates; he says no. Oprah says as it’s Valentine’s Day in two days, who better to have than Lionel Ritchie, Mr Love Song himself. He has hand-picked some of his favorites. He sings and wishes the crowd a Happy Valentine’s Day. Oprah runs on stage to hug him and says that was beautiful.

Someone you all know recently admitted that he texts and talks in the car. Today he takes the commitment, he takes Oprah’s pledge. He says it will be hard for him, it’s like kicking an addiction. He’s in the car and the phone rings and he lets it go. Can you imagine how dumb you’d feel if you picked up a call and got in an accident? At work he calls a mandatory company meeting to say that company policy now means that no one can text or do company business in the car. Nate Berkus and his amazing staff, take the pledge. Oprah says we used to drive and think about things in the cars and have some time to ourselves.

Oprah has a car to help Haiti, over 300 celebrities have signed it already- George Clooney, Mariah Carey, Julia Roberts and so many others through Stars for a Cause. This Chrysler 300 will be auctioned next week, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross for Haiti relief. Oprah agreed to sign the car on the basis that she would put her No-Phone Zone bumper sticker on the car. She attaches the sticker, signs the car and thanks Chrysler. They have modified the pledge- you can agree to stop texting, agree to only hands free calling or give it all up. Have a great Valentine’s Day and go to Oprah.com to download Lionel Ritchie singing Hello to you.

WHAT WE LEARNED TODAY:

Oprah, Letterman and Leno were all in the same room to film their Superbowl advert, it was not a special effect.

Carrying the Olympic torch would turn anyone to jelly.

Drew Brees is comfortable in his own skin.

There’s only one Lionel Ritchie.

Episode 24: Celine Dion’s Showstopping Surprise

Nobody does it like Celine Dion. She is the number one selling artists of the last decade and has been a good friend of the Oprah show for the last few years. They hug. The crowd are hysterical. Celine Dion has a new movie coming out that the audience just saw, Oprah says it’s fantastic, its called Celine Through the Eyes of the World. and opens on February 17th for two weeks only. Oprah wants to go on a world tour, she asks if Celine ever forgets where she is when she goes on stage and says Hello South Africa, Hello Prague Hello France- does she get told just before she goes out. Celine hopes she doesn’t forget. Going to South Africa was an amazing experience for her, for her son and mother, to meet Nelson Mandela. It was a very emotional moment , it was beyond being an artist. At first the camera crew was there for the family, for them to bring back souvenirs and memories, but she said they quickly forgot about the cameras and the truth came out. Her mom was on tour with them for the first time, and her son was there too. Her husband, René said that the footage was too good to keep it to themselves. It was an extraordinary opportunity and now it gives the fans a VIP ticket to see them in the car, the hotel room. It is like travelling with them.

They show a clip of Celine’s tribute to Michael Jackson at the Grammys. She says it was awkward and an emotional feeling for all of them. She was and is a big fan of Michael Jackson. As a teenager she had posters of Michael Jackson on her wall, as did Oprah. She thought that as a French speaking person, she should learn English just in case she might get to perform with him one day, plus she thought if she could be in showbusiness, she could sing with him. She went to school to learn English, she met with him, she performed with him, he came to her show in Vegas, so the Grammys for her was a very difficult emotion. She as honored to be asked, but she was mad that Michael Jackson was not there with them. All of them didnt really want to perform but wanted to carry his message. Even showbiz people sometimes take what the media says as the truth, so she thought Michael was sick. When she saw his movie, she was mad because he was in really good shape. She felt the loss so deeply. After the Grammys, she got together with 80 artists to record a new version of We Are The World, led by Oprah’s friend Quincy Jones. Celine says life does things to us, bad things like earthquakes, and no one deserves that, and it is the responsibility of all of us, of all the artists who can use their voice or TV to raise money they  should. They can get together to say lets get together. It was magical, it was enjoyable, its time to lift them up and not forget, not put our heads down.

Oprah says its wonderful that Celine’s family gets to travel together, and that its hard to believe her son René-Charles is 9. Oprah says she remembers when he was born, just like Celine does. Celine says time flies, he was homeschooling then tour schooling. But now he has his own school, life and teacher, he’s so proud to wear his uniform. They have a female labrador puppy, Charlie. Celine repeatedly says you change your voice with a puppy, and does an impression, Oprah says she does it all the time with her two new puppies.

For one year cameras followed Celine’s every move across five continents, 25 countries, and 93 cities. She sold out one of the largest stadiums in the world in a day. Three million fans came from all over the globe to hear her voice. The concert movie experience is unforgettable with intimate family moments and signature spectacular performances. René is amazing because he walks in the house with treats in two pockets, the puppy is only 5 months old. René regrets the fact that he didn’t have a puppy as a child. Oprah was sorry to hear Celine had a miscarriage. Celine says it’s life, people go through this. They are on the fifth try for a child, she says this one has to come in if five is her lucky number. The crowd cheer. Oprah asks if these moments make her marriage stronger. Celine doesn’t think a child or a pregnancy should make a marriage stronger, it shouldn’t be the job of the child to repair a mariage. People always say things to comfort her, to make her stronger. She will be the one to tell if she’s pregnant and if not she is a lucky artist, wife and mother, and she’s glad.

Oprah asks if there was a conscious decision on tour to enjoy their time abroad. Celine says they decided to make it not only an artist tour but to make it a family adventure to see the beauty of the world. Gail and Oprah went to see her in France. Oprah didn’t want to because the singing would be in French. She says it was fun. Celine did the big tour and then she has been off for a year. Oprah asks what a typical day is like. Celine has never been so busy in her life to go to school at 6.30am with her son. They get involved at school, sometimes she’s pizza mom, but she loves it. She gets to know the environment of her child, she wants to be R.C.’s mom, not R.C.”s mom Celine Dion. She wants to engage, she says we call it a normal life for most people but for Celine it is extraordinary. This is the place she feels so rewarded, to make a difference in her sons life. The schoolwork she can’t even help with but she tries to pretend that she can.

During Celine’s world tour, René-Charles had a private tutor, with mommy time in between shows. After he looses his precious stuffed lamb, Celine screamed and cries when it was found. She says it was such a big thing, when her son started homeschooling he had this lamb with him all the time, and they left it in  a hotel room. R.C. wasnt sleeping well, they tried to get another one online but a new one isn’t crooked and doesn’t smell right. She called the hotel room for 4 or 5 days and she wanted it more than her son wanted it. It was a big thing, she doesnt know if all mothesrs are like this, she gets attached to a 2c thing or $200 thing. New stuff doesnt mean so much but things with memories she is atached to. She has shoeboxes full of leaves, rocks and flowers that her son collected. She keeps everything. When Celine’s dad passed away alot of flowers were sent; nuns in Quebec can dry your flowers and make them into rosary beads. Her whole family received beads from the flowers given to her dad. She doesn’t know what she’ll do wth it but she’ll make something and give it back to her son. This is the longest she’s been away from him, five days is the longest. She wants him with her every day but she respects his life. A video message from her son plays, saying they love her and miss her. Celine and Oprah grab hands.

Celine’s music resonates with people all over the world. Oprah says that music really is the language of the world. Lyndsey from Liverpool England grew up in 16 different foster homes, and Celine Dion’s music taught her to to be loved and love back. Lyndsey waited for Celine outside her hotel room but couldn’t speak, she was too emotional. On Skype, she thanks Celine for making her a better person than she was, she loves her so much and she will always be thankful to Celine for being such an inspiration as a mum, a wife, a daughter and a sibling; she’s a better person because of what Celine does. Alice is a Palestinian student in Jerusalem, she says the music is very popular in the Arab world, even though they’re stereotyped as being a closed society. They like dramatic Western music, and Celine can be heard at many weddings- the first dance for the bride and groom is often a Celine song. Her favorite song is My Heart Will Go On, but she’ll probably use either Power of Love or Because You Love Me for her first song.

All over the world, in the film,  Oprah says the women with the scarves in Arab countries mouth along with the words just like Western women. Celine says that people may not realise how powerful music can be, it breaks barriers and has no religion. Celine is there to serve the music the best she can, she’s not there to create anything. God has given her something to work with, a voice, and she serves the music with the message. She serves the music as best she can. Celine is about to sing a song that represents how she feels about her family, friends and fans, and it’s a song for Oprah. As she sings, family photos are displayed on a screen behind her.

They have been called Canada’s national treasure, the Canadian Tenors are shooting up the charts. They are huge Celine fans. They think they are here for a program on hot new talent, but they’re not. Celine is back stage waiting in the wings about to sing along. In the fake show, Oprah introduces the Canadian Tenors who say they’ve had a great year and will be singing at the Olympics. They sing Hallelujah. Behind them comes Celine Dion, they are shocked yet continue to sing and they all harmonize with Celine Dion.

Oprah goes on stage, and asks them how it was for them , they say they were in shock, they thank Celine for being an inspiration and thank her for the opportunity. One member says that Celine Dion and Oprah have the same quality as Maria Callas to touch people’s heart. Another says that the Oprah factor was enough, and then adding Celine nearly stopped his heart. Celine is going back to Vegas, starting March 2011, with a big band, she will perform her own songs and a tribute to old time Hollywood. The Canadian Tenor’s have a new album in stores now and Celine’s movie will be in the theatres for two weeks only, thanks everybody.

Episode 21: Oprah Fridays Live

After all these years, it’s not often they have a first, but yesterday they had their first baby being born in the Harpo Studios. An hour later, it was a baby. Lori McKendall from Toronto Canada, and she is on the phone from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. She had been trying for years to get to the show, she flew in for 2 days and thought she’d be fine at 27 weeks pregnant, but it happened there. She went to the bathroom and her water broke, after that it progressed really fast. Thanks to all the staff at the studio for getting her to the ambulance, and the paramedics, the baby was born about 20 minutes after she arrived at the hospital. The baby is having a lot of tests, he’s doing pretty good but it’ll be a long rough road. He was 2lbs 13 oz, but they’re checking his heart and lungs and things today. His name is Justin, Oprah says aah, Justin Oprah. Lori says they were considering Harpo. A contraction hit just as Oprah went to see her in the ambulance. Oprah says we will all send our love Justin McKendall’s way, and whenever Lori is ready, Oprah will fly her back to see the show. Thank you.

It’s Friday and Oprah is live in Chicago. She asks if everyone saw Pink at the Grammys, all she can say is Wowie Kazowie. That was something else, coming up, Pink! Wowie says Oprah, they hug. Oprah whoops. The audience go crazy. Oprah says Pink certainly gave the world something to talk about. Pink says it was fun, a good night. Oprah asks if it’ll be a momentous part of her life. Pink says yes, she really realized that when everyone stood up at the end. She went from super-graceful with the silks to all  tee hee, she waves and looks nerdy. Oprah wants her to do a play by play after the show on Oprah.com. to explain how she sang while upside down, because you can’t even hear her breathe. Pinks says on the trapeze she breathes even more so people know the mic is live. She was a gymnast for 7 years and loves acrobatics, and she’s seen the dancers do it before but never the lead singer so she thought why not. She sounds better upside down, she doesn’t know why. Oprah asks if she ever gets out of breath. Pink says when she walks out she’s nervous and her voice shakes, but once she’s in the silks, she’s no longer thinking, she’s in the moment. Her mind turns off, her voice turns on.  She wanted to do Glitter for the Grammys because after 10 years people still don’t know what she does. Its a spriritual song and the performance is spiritual, ethereal and visually beautiful. Oprah says it felt transendent, we got in the music. Pink says she wanted to get all the famous people wet. Her husband said a lot of people were shielding themselves from the water, and others were basking in it. Oprah asks whats she doing to her body to be so lean and muscley. She is just back from tour where she gets in really good shape, when she comes home she cooks and gets fat and happy. She used  the P90x video workout, but she bulks up too much so now she runs 70 minutes and does yoga for an hour a day. Oprah says she’s heard she has man-abs, Pink says now she has a bagel.

Oprah asks if growing up Pink wanted to be an Olympic gymnast. Oprah heard at one point she could do 18 back handsprings in a row- it was her party trick, that or she could sing Vision of Love. She seperated her shoulder the night before her US tour started, which was fun, so she can’t flip anymore, but the silks are making her stronger. She feels most herself onstage. She did say to herself well done after the Grammy. She didn’t forget the words or start laughing- that was the fastest spin she’s ever done, so she got a little dizzy. Oprah says it was a fabulous moment for all of us, thank you.

Pink dazzled  the Grammys and a TV audience of 26 million. “I Don’t Believe You” is off her Platinum album, Funhouse, and is the most humble song she’s ever written. This song is apologetic, questioning, begging. She and her husband broke up for a year. Pink was sure she was perfect prior to it,and she spent 6 years trying to change someone else. But she realized that she was distracting herself from learning who she was. Pink thinks you learn more about yourself in the context of a relationship, rather than starting again. Oprah says that’s what it is all about. Pink sings live. Oprah says that was very personal. The crowd applaud.

All eyes will be on Miami this Sunday when 100 million people will tune in for the Superbowl. Oprah tunes in for the commercials.  Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has always been larger than life, from college football champion, to professional wrestling where his alter ego The Rock was born. Then Hollywood came calling and he scored again. He got the highest salary ever for his first lead role in The Scorpion King; his movies have grossed $1.5 billion, worldwide.

This is his first visit to Oprah, but she saw him at something last year and said oh there’s the Rock, he says that he says the same- oh there’s Oprah. He says it never gets old looking so good, he had a good upbringing with a mom who taught him to be gracious and thankful. As a 23-24 year old graduate of the University of Miami, he had $7 in his pocket, he had to move back in with his parents in Tampa, so he had a goal list. 1. was to buy his parents a house, – they’d struggled as he grew up and lived in little efficiencies, 2 was to marry his college sweetheart,- they since divorced but they are business partners and very very close, 3 was to graduate,  4 was to get out of all debt and the last was to take care of his grandmother’s situation, she had nowhere to live which he did. He did all that. Oprah asks hypothetically if when coming from nothing it is exciting to do things for others- he says yes, therein lies the power that Oprah can attest to, the power to change lives. The quote ‘if you”ve ever been hungry, you’ll never be full’ plays a big part in his life. Oprah agrees, you’ll never be satisfied, so how can you improve? which was what she said to Pink at the commercial break. When you see a performer push themselves beyond the expected, it makes you look inside yourself and think what can I do? That’s the power of great art right there. Dwayne says therein  lies the power of our president, and others, but it comes down to wanting to be a better person everyday. His hunger doesn’t subside, but his perspective changes. For some time he was investing in his career, but it wasn’t until his divorce with Danni, who had the capacity to bring him through the sludge of divorce and out to greatness. It taught him the power of investing in himself, not just his career. As an only child and fairly selfish, through the divorce process and having a little girl he grew as a person. Oprah remarks that he seems so calm and not  The Rock-like. he says he can be more The Rock.

Dwayne is a former college football camp; he’d like the Colts to win, but there’s something special about the New Orleans Saints. For those of us who tune in for the commercials, Dwayne will give some tips- The Colts are one of the strongest teams of the decade, they’ve had tremendous success, they have a Hall of Fame winning quarterback, they know what it is to win. New Orleans have an intangible magic, New Orleans and America have rallied behind the game so they could win too. If Oprah wanted to impress people at the party she’s going to, to make it look like she knows football, this is what she should say. She should walk in the room and say something like the pass protection has to improve, and then she should step back out. Or she could say, there’s got to be better blocking up front. If all that fails then she should walk in and scream over and over, Where’s the flags, ref? I quit. That’s good, Oprah says.

Dwayne will be at home because he’s shooting on Monday, a new action film. His goal ten years ago was to have a wide range of acting work, however he loves comedies and family movies, but there’s nothing like kicking butt. When he first got money, he bought his parents a house and himself a Rolex watch. It was the status symbol he knew as a kid. He wore it like 3 times then gave it to his dad. Now he does simple things to indulge, he spends time with his girl, she’s an amazing rider, he tries to sing to her, she’ll walk out. Oprah asks what’s the craziest thing that  a woman has done to get his attention? He often gets notes left on his car or his mailbox or at the security gate. A couple of years ago, a professional business woman showed him a tattoo of his face on her thigh. Oprah says interesting, it’s a delight to talk to him and she’d like to do it again.

Oprah is here with Cristina Ferrarei, the ‘love chef’ who loves to cook for those she loves. Cristina says that after the show she’ll be wrapped in silks, dipped in sauce and twirled from the ceiling so that everyone will remember this show. She’s starting with making guacamole, and it’s a healthy version so she can stick with her resolution to lose the 87lbs she gained over Christmas. The recipe is on Oprah.com. She adds alot of jalapeno, some cilantro and salt to the avocado that Oprah is mashing. They add lime juice, with the best squeezer gadget in the kitchen. Oprah didn’t know that lime juice is traditionally added to guacamole. The pit at the bottom of the bowl stops the guacamole from browning. They move on to tacos, taco seasoning is added after the lean beef is browned in canola oil. Her idea for the superbowl party is to keep her glycemic index even, just like on yesterday’s program. Filo cups are baked in the oven and filled with the taco meat for taco bites. They are frosted like a cupcake with guacamole, with a little cheese and salsa on top. Oprah says its healthy if you eat two or three of them, not a whole plate, Cristina says that you fill yourself up on two or three so that you don’t eat junk for the whole day. Christina is famous for her kick-butt chilli, the secret is beer and masa at the end to thicken it up. She serves it with mini potato skins made from fingerling potatoes, with a little terriyaki. They can be used to dip or to stuff with chilli. All the recipes are on Oprah.com, go Colts and Saints and make your car a no-phone zone

WHAT WE LEARNED TODAY:

You learn most about yourself in the context of a relationship: stick with it, learn, don’t quit.

During the Grammys, Pink wanted all the famous people to get wet.

‘If you”ve ever been hungry, you’ll never be full’.

Set goals early, achieve them.

The Colts may well win the Superbowl on Sunday, but the Saints could too.

A VERY QUICK SUMMARY:

The way to The Rock’s heart is not via a tattoo of his face on your thigh.

Episode 19: Stars of Reality TV: Fantasia’s Comeback and Ruby’s Revelations

Her raw singing talent thrust her into stardom, but it all came crashing down after her. Over 30 million people watched her dream come to life as Fantasia Barrino won American Idol in 2004. She had it all—and almost lost it. Her first album went platinum, and her Broadway debut in The Color Purple landed her rave reviews and brought audiences to their feet. But suddenly her meteoric rise became a troubling freefall-  sales  of her second album were dispappointing, and as the sole breadwinner for her family, her finances began to crumble. She almost lost her house, she put on 30lbs, and she kept missing appearances which resulted in a hit on her reputation.

Fantasia is here. Her eyes water whenever she sees footage of herself win American Idol- it was a special moment that changed her life. It was something she always wanted to do but she felt it would never happen for her because she didn’t have a diploma, she is a single mom. She felt that her curse had been broken and that she could follow her dreams. Oprah recalls that several years ago she warned Fantasia that with all the money she would get “cousins” coming out of the woodwork. Does Fantasia think she mismanaged the financial side? Yes she did. She turned up to perform, and she let others handle her money and arrange where she had to be. She allowed them to take care of everything. She was young and naive and didn’t realise that she had to be involved in accounts and schedules, to make sure that people weren’t taking advantage of her talent.

Oprah, as the producer of The Color Purple had been so excited for Fantasia to star in the broadway hit. Scott and the others were so excited and thrilled. At the end, Fantasia began to miss so many performances that they had to pay back over  half a million to the audience in cancelled performance fees. More than the money, this was for many the first Broadway play that people had seen- people would bus from California to see her, and they were extremely disappointed when she wasn’t there. Fantasia had never done Broadway, nor had she seen a Broadway play. She wasn’t prepared for what comes with it. 8 shows a week and she had to also deal with her own life as a single mom taking care of everybody. It became an overload. What people don’t know is that she had to have two tumors removed from her vocal chords- as an artist who sang since she was five, she’d never been to a throat doctor- this was the first time she had worked with throat coaches. You can’t give your best only on some days, she doesn’t know how to give half. Towards the end she was very tired, and if she wasn’t on stage she was in the hospital getting an IV. Why didn’t you tell me? asks Oprah. Fantasia says she couldn’t find her. They laugh. Oprah asks why she didn’t say something to someone. Fantasia says that some of the producers knew she was getting an IV, and she just had to keep coming back for the next performance. She went to the best doctor in LA who took the tumors out and now she’s as good as gold.

Oprah says that’s scary for anybody, but for Fantasia it is her livelihood and joy. She couldn’t work for 6 weeks and she has to pay all the bills. She asked the lord and he said stop taking care of everybody. Now a reality show follows her battle back into success. As a single mom without a diploma, she wants more for her daughter than she has. Footage shows her daughter has 4 American Girl dolls, they all needed clothes. Her daughter got a guitar and a pampering party for all her friends for her birthday party. Her mother says Fantasia gives her daughter so much to make up for her absence. Oprah asks if she’s worried about spoiling her daughter? A little, because she’s always on the road and she has to keep working to pay for a good school.

2 years ago, Fantasia told People magazine that she was too broke to buy pizza. Oprah asks was there not a lot of money which came in after American Idol, and Fantasia says she doesn’t want to throw anyone under the bus- there was a lot of money coming in but she doesn’t know where it went. After the surgery, no money was coming in so she called her manager because her card was declined trying to buy pizza. The manager wired her some money, and at that point Fantasia knew she’d been mishandled. It hit her, wow. And she couldn’t ask anyone in her family  for anything, this was of her making. When she got her money from American Idol she’d send it home to her mom who was living in a hotel having just divorced. After she won, she wanted to make her whole family happy. In a family of six adults, she’s the only one working. In her reality show you can see how Teeny, her big brother, is unwilling to work. Her mom said Fantasia  enabled him, and now he’s disabled- he will not work. He has everything that he’s ever asked Fantasia for. He hangs out in the pool house all day long. Fantasia has decided that she doesn’t wasnt to take care of everybody. She has had it, she’s over it, it’s time for Teeny to go. She texted him to go. He was hysterical.

Fantasia put him out, don’t get her wrong she loves him, he’s her brother, but it’s too much. He’s a man, and the bible says if a man don’t work then a man don’t eat. Before Fantasia was blessed, her brother was the only one that worked, he could have gone to college on a scholarship, and now they are all take take take. She cherishes her house, and as they don’t pay the bills, they don’t cherish it. She hasn’t changed with money, she’s grown. Oprah quotes a book, The Gift of Fear, saying when you say no and others don’t listen, then they are trying to control you. Oprah asks if Fantasia was cautious about exposing her family this way? A litle, but she wanted them to see themselves, and they don’t see how hard she is working. Coming home to their drama where they don’t even say thank you. They pout, and she needs them, so she always ends up giving them something.

She had a lot of lawsuits coming to her, from her family and others, and they came after both of her homes. The home went up for auction. It was very embarrassing. What has she learned, Oprah asks. She has learned how to say no. Two, she has to be in control of her destiny- her money, her shows, everything. She is 25 and she can’t allow people to take care of her destiny. Oprah says she’s lucky to know that by 25. Fantasia performs her new single as inspired by her struggle.

Millions of women connect with reality star Ruby Gettinger, they laugh cry and struggle along as she tries to loose weight. Ruby at her heaviest weighed 716lbs, she knows her problem is both mental and physical. She doesn’t remember anything from her life before age 13. Now Ruby is starting to peel back the layers to discover the truth. This season cameras follow Ruby as she achieves major breakthroughs- she wears jeans for the first time in her life. She comes into the studio, wearing jeans. Last time Ruby told Oprah that she’d never weighed below 350lbs as an adult, she is just under that now. Last time Oprah asked what Ruby was feeding- and she was feeding pain. Her childhood has been surpressed. As a child the only medication that you can access is food. She thought this was just about  food, but it is about her pain in the past. To help track down her lost childhood, she hired a private detective who found a physician’s assistant who treated Ruby and her mother over 20 years ago. She met with the doctor, Dr Dukes; they used to come weekly, and he thinks that the mother was trying to protect Ruby from something that she suffered as a child. The doctor thought that Ruby’s mother fed her so much to keep her unattractive. She doesn’t know what happened, she will sit down with the doctor and her mother to find the secret behind her lost childhood.

Ruby recently realised that her missing years are the reason she overeats. Dr Dukes and her mom were really close at one time, so Ruby feels he’ll help. Her mother started seeing Dr Dukes for general things, but later on she figured out that there was something severely wrong and she was treated for clinical depression, and considered suicide. She was afraid of suicide, nothing happened but it almost did. When she was 11 or 12 she was by herself with someone who was kin to her and he told her not to open that door. The doctor says his aunt fed her beautiful girls to make them less attractive to men, and that maybe this was the case here. Her mother says she enabled all her children.

Oprah says that our past affects who we are now, but the real issue with food is what we do every time we have an emotion. Oprah knows from experience that emotional eaters eat to deal with their feelings- when happy, sad, stressed, bored.. . Ruby didn’t realise she was over-eating on snacks, all day long. Ruby needed food, it was giving her something that she wasn’t getting.  Oprah says food was love for Ruby. Ruby agrees.  Ruby’s father was gone alot because he was in the airforce. She doesn’t remember him at all from that time, but from age 13 up she became close to him to teach him how to love. He was a geat father and provider, but he couldn’t hold her hand or say he loved her. Oprah says Ruby  ate to make herself loved- with a disconnected father and a suicidal depressed mother.

Ruby went to see a plastic surgeon on her TV program, “Ruby”. He draws on the skin on her body- you trade the fat for loose skin or for scars. She had been excited to see a surgeon, but seeing the scars was horrific. The choice of hanging skin or scars is difficult. Oprah has always been told that if you cut the underarm flab, the scar never goes away. Ruby says it’s a no-win situation. She feels the hanging skin is worse than the scars. Nothing can change the hanging skin. Ruby had diabetes, and now it is under control, she no longer has to take medication. She was on 4 medications for the silent killer- tomorrow’s show is a one-hour special on the silent killer. Ruby feels healthier than ever, she has a fast-pace, she is not limited by anything, At 700lb, she couldn’t have sat in this chair. She wants to help others- to ask what are you hungry for, what are you feeding? Initially she couldn’t deal with the fact that she was a food addict. Oprah is a food addict, she doesn’t like to say it but it is the truth.

It’s a journey, season 3 of Ruby starts on Monday on the Style Network. Remember don’t text and drive. Thank  you.

WHAT WE LEARNED TODAY:

Learn to say no, even to family, if they ask for more than you can give.

Fantasia works really, really hard.

Money doesn’t change you, it makes you grow.

When you say no and others don’t listen, then they are trying to control you.

You don’t get to be 716lb if you are not feeding a suppression.

A VERY QUICK SUMMARY:

Don’t be the sole breadwinner in a house of 6 capable adults. Food is food, not love.
